United Health Group Brazil (UHGB) is a hospital group focused on individuals’ wellbeing. It encompasses 21 recognized hospitals and medical clinics distributed in six Brazilian states, with a structure totaling 2,700 beds and more than 17,000 professionals.
United Health Group Brazil wanted to develop an enhanced, high-quality user experience by implementing a centralized, user-friendly platform that included the best features for managing digital experience and web content. To accomplish this, delivering responsive design across all major digital channels would be imperative, as would ensuring that business and IT users could easily access the system and perform their individual needs. But UHGB needed to accomplish this in a way that created autonomy with less IT interaction and reduced total cost of ownership without eliminating existing systems.
Achieving UHGB’s goals would be a challenging task. Not only would they have to manage a multisite project architecture, but they needed to build a codebase with a theme and three sub-themes—along with modules and components—which would be solidly reusable across the twenty-three sites that needed to be developed, scoped in such a way that changes made in one would not affect others.
Working with POSSIBLE Brazil and Wunderman Thompson Brazil, the teams used an open-source component-based Drupal theme called Particle, which enhances organization and presentation while handling dynamic data, template variants, and documentation. To manage the multisite configurations, POSSIBLE Brazil implemented the Drupal module Config Split, which allows defining sets of configuration that will get exported to separate directories when exporting and be merged when importing.
With just a few configuration adjustments, POSSIBLE Brazil was able to deliver multiple websites using the existing codebase over a 2-3 day period. UHGB moved from its decentralized infrastructure, with individual servers for each hospital, to a cloud environment with unified management and usage control of all the sites. UHGB’s marketers now have creative freedom and ease of use to make site updates, while allowing digital IT teams to stay in control, and Site Factory has ultimately reduced costs per site while helping UHGB maintain brand consistency.
