ABB OPTICAL wanted to support two websites: ABBOptical.com for providing doctors with information about contact lens distribution services, and YourLens.com for practitioners to easily set up their own site to market to and directly connect with their patients.   

Challenge

Authoring content on the company’s previous CMS was an unreliable, time-consuming process. Migrating 30 .net sites was a painful experience that left room for error. It became clear ABB required an easily scalable platform to take care of the needs of more than 1,400 doctors.

The premier platform for the optical industry, ABB OPTICAL GROUP delivers tailored business solutions and world-class customer service to eye care practitioners. The company supplies nearly two-thirds of independent eye care professionals across the country with brand name contact lenses, fully customizable gas permeable and custom specialty soft contact lenses, ophthalmic lenses and more.

The Situation

ABB OPTICAL wanted to support two websites: for doctors, ABBOptical.com, providing them with information about its contact lens distribution services as well as practitioner resources and account setup options, and YourLens.com, a website-as-a-service business model that would allow practitioners to easily set up their own website to market and directly connect with their patients.   

The Challenge

ABB OPTICAL’s marketing team faced a number of challenges in their path toward supporting its two sites. Authoring content on the company’s previous CMS, DotNetNuke, was an unreliable, time-consuming process, requiring authors to move content to three different environments to get it published. Migrating 30 .NET sites was a painful experience with ample room for introducing errors. The addition of the YourLens.com site created a need to support the new B2C business model for its practitioners’ patients. It became clear ABB OPTICAL required a platform that could easily and securely scale to take care of the needs of more than 1,400 doctors.

The Solution

ABB OPTICAL’s marketing and e-commerce teams worked together to implement Acquia Site Factory, building standardized templates for YourLens.com on which doctors could create and customize their own Drupal B2C websites. This allows ABB OPTICAL to easily manage multiple customized sites in a secure transactional environment, while still allowing for decentralized content management.

On the company’s B2B site ABBOptical.com, the teams implemented Acquia Content Hub, streamlining the content authoring process down from three environments to one single platform  one that meets all security standards for HIPAA and PCI compliance.

The Results

Today, more than 80 revenue-generating YourLens.com websites are now hosted on Acquia Site Factory. In addition, adding and replacing content on ABBOptical.com is much more efficient. One individual is capable of operating all of ABB OPTICAL’s content authoring needs without requiring promotional content and press releases to be republished over and over again, as they can now be distributed with the push of a button thanks to Acquia Content Hub.
