The Client

Ocean Network Express (ONE) is a global container shipping company that is headquartered in Tokyo and Singapore and offers an extensive liner network service covering over 100 countries. It was formed in 2016 as a joint venture of the Japanese shipping companies Nippon Yusen Kaisha, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, and K Line, inheriting the container shipping operations of its parent companies.

The Situation

ONE was required to launch a brand new global corporate website to enable container booking, and roll out and manage 30 new local websites for each subsidiary by Feb 2018 in advance of the start of operations across six continents in April 2018. The shipping industry is a highly competitive market with huge global competitors. The universally recognizable name ONE and bright pink branding were designed to express the new company as one providing innovative and flexible service for competitive differentiation.

The Challenge

From day one, as a new global joint venture, ONE had to meet global enterprise standards for a unified brand experience, management, security and compliance and infrastructure efficiency.  Providing a modern customer experience including personalization and allowing the potential for future innovation were requirements as well. Managing cost and resource efficiency was critical to keep the new organization lean and efficient. Another challenge was to nurture the digital mindset and culture within the new organization, given that the new company was a collaboration between three established more traditional shipping companies.
