The Client

An Irish-registered manufacturer of private label over-the-counter pharmaceuticals, Perrigo started in a Michigan town in the 19th century. Today, the company has more than 10,000 employees and 3,000 product formulations.

The Situation

With a desire to launch 400+ sites globally for Perrigo brands, Perrigo knew it needed a content delivery and multisite provision platform. And it wanted a platform that could unify its varying content platforms and allow the company to implement a global governance framework that fosters brand security, site performance, site security and more. Building a flexible, scalable platform to meet its digital business needs and allowing it to launch sites much faster was a top priority.

The Challenge

Perrigo’s existing architecture was not scalable and did not have reusability. In addition, it was difficult to use; developers or end users who wanted to perform updates or enhancements were in for a tedious, time-consuming process. And in the previous architecture, tasks like website globalization and localization would be overwhelmingly laborious. For a global organization that intended to develop a global platform, these challenges posed a serious risk. It was clear that a futuristic, cost-effective approach was necessary.

The Solution

Perrigo partner Ameex conducted stakeholder interviews and gathered pain points from Perrigo business and content authors, then laid out a roadmap for their new platform. With the goal of building a true digital experience platform and providing an intuitive user experience, the teams implemented four key elements:

  • Acquia Site Factory: Ameex leveraged Acquia Site Factory’s complete feature set to increase efficiency, reduce time-to-market and reduce maintenance costs.
  • Acquia BLT: Ameex chose Acquia BLT to streamline the DevOps CI/CD workflow with an automated deployment process.
  • Multisite Profile: The teams planned a profile-based multisite approach to improve global governance.
  • Layout Builder: The teams planned to optimize the Drupal architecture for having flexible layouts and features by using component-based design implemented with Drupal’s Layout Builder.

The Results

This approach allowed Ameex and Perrigo to create multiple corporate and brand sites within a matter of weeks. After the first website was implemented, subsequent sites were implemented at 80% reduced cost, helping to save time and implementation cost, as well as maintenance costs. Overall, the total cost of ownership reduced significantly. Additional results have been significant. Users are now able to clone the site for another country in a single click of a button. Reusable components were utilized to the maximum extent by the users, thereby reducing time, effort and most importantly, cost.
