Digital Asset Management

There's a perception in the market that Acquia DAM has been standing still while competitors race to ship AI features. I want to address that feedback directly - because although we have AI features we have been doubling down on validating on how Marketers can drive meaningful outcomes using Agents in DAM use-cases.

Let me tell you what's actually happening.

What we've already built

Over the past 18 months, Acquia DAM has shipped a series of capabilities that represent a genuine shift in what the platform can do. Natural Language Search, launched earlier this year, lets your team find any asset by describing what they need in plain language, in any language, without knowing how a file was tagged. Video Creator brings on-brand video production directly into the DAM, with AI scripting, subtitling, and translation built in. Asset Intelligence activates the moment a file enters the system: automatically identifying content, enriching metadata, generating alt text, and surfacing related assets. Nearly 300 integrations connect your content to the tools your teams already use. This is the groundwork for truly AI-powered digital asset management

These were all features that helped marketers drive better outcomes in their existing workflows, but it was a deliberate shift to getting the platform ready for what’s next.

What's coming and why it matters

We are now excited to embrace the paradigm shift with AI Agents.

Later this year, Acquia DAM will introduce DAM AI agents: purpose-built AI agents for marketing teams, specialized Digital Teammates that don't just manage your asset library, they actively work inside it on your behalf. Think of it this way: Acquia DAM provides the tools and the governed foundation. You choose the goals. Your Digital Teammates get to work.

We're building four of them, each with a distinct role:

The Curator keeps your library organized without human intervention. It recognizes visually identical images and prevents library bloat. It looks at an image, identifies SKUs, faces, or locations, and assigns taxonomy codes automatically. The result: a library that stays clean and usable as volume scales, without a dedicated person maintaining it.

The Producer accelerates content production. It understands a request like "I need the web version of this" and converts a 50MB TIFF to an optimized WebP automatically. It detects focal points and generates correctly proportioned crops for every channel (Instagram, web, email, etc.)  without routing a request back to the creative team. Hours of production work become minutes.

The Guardian protects your brand. It flags uploaded content that appears AI-generated for human review. It runs brand compliance checks against your guidelines before assets move into campaigns. It's the safeguard that makes automation trustworthy rather than risky.

The Strategist turns your DAM data into decisions. It analyzes asset performance across campaigns, identifies which content is driving results and which is being ignored, and surfaces recommendations for where to invest creative resources next. Instead of exporting reports and building pivot tables, your team gets forward-looking intelligence from the system that holds all the data.

Every one of these agents operates as a digital teammate, inheriting all the permissions and governance that you rely on. We also couple this with Human-in-the-Loop governance built in, nothing reaches production without a human approval step. Every action is traceable. You get AI speed without giving up control.

How this is different from what competitors are offering

The DAM market is moving fast on AI agents right now. What most vendors are shipping are smarter libraries — agents that enrich metadata, tag images, and check brand guidelines within the DAM itself. That's useful. But it stops at the asset boundary.

What makes Acquia's approach different is the foundation agents work from, and where they can go.

Our agents work from the full context of an asset: not just what it looks like, but its rights status, governance rules, performance history, and campaign association. An agent that only reads the surface of your assets will automate the wrong things confidently. Ours have the complete picture before they act.

And because Acquia DAM is part of a connected platform, our agents don't stop when the asset is approved. Through our MCP layer — an open standard that connects AI agents across applications — a DAM agent can pass an approved, rights-cleared asset directly into a web publishing workflow, a governance check, or a site build in Acquia Source. A Web Developer Digital Teammate can take DAM content and build a Source CMS site around it. Your brand assets become the source of truth for your entire content operation, not just your library.

No standalone DAM can replicate this. It requires the platform on both sides of the hand-off.

What you need to do now

The value you get from DAM AI agents depends entirely on the quality of the foundation they work from. Agents need governed metadata, clean rights data, consistent taxonomy, and performance history attached to assets. The organizations that will get the most from this capability are the ones building that foundation now.

If you're an existing Acquia DAM customer, this means auditing your metadata structure, confirming your rights and expiration data is current, and making sure your governance workflows are set up to scale.

If you're evaluating DAM for the first time, ask every vendor on your shortlist a simple question: when your agents make decisions about my assets, what do they actually know? The answer will tell you a great deal about how much those agents will actually do for you.

The bottom line

Acquia DAM is not standing still. We've been building toward this moment deliberately — investing in Acquia DAM’s AI foundation, the search intelligence, and the platform connectivity that makes agents genuinely useful rather than just impressive in a demo.

Your DAM is about to get a team. The best time to prepare is before they arrive.

Frequently Asked Questions

AI agents in a DAM are autonomous programs that perform specific tasks inside your asset library on your behalf — without manual triggers. Unlike traditional automation rules, agents can interpret context, make decisions, and act across multiple steps. In Acquia DAM, agents will handle tasks like automatic metadata tagging, image cropping, brand compliance checking, rights verification, and asset performance analysis.

Acquia DAM is introducing four AI agents, each with a dedicated role:
The Curator keeps your library clean by preventing duplicate assets and auto-assigning taxonomy codes.
The Producer handles content transformation — file conversions, channel-specific crops, and format optimization — without involving the creative team.
The Guardian protects your brand by verifying rights expiration, flagging AI-generated content, and running compliance checks before assets reach campaigns.
The Strategist analyzes which assets are performing across campaigns and recommends where to invest creative resources next.

Most DAM vendors build AI that works inside the library: smarter tagging, better search, metadata enrichment. Acquia's agents work from the full context of an asset: rights status, governance rules, performance history, and campaign data. And they don't stop at the library boundary. Acquia DAM is built into Acquia Source, connecting your assets to the full platform — web publishing workflows, governance checks, site builds, and the complete suite of Acquia AI agents — so every part of your digital presence draws from the same governed, intelligent source of truth. A standalone DAM enriches your assets. Acquia DAM activates them across everything you build.

Yes. Every Acquia DAM AI agent operates with Human-in-the-Loop governance built in. No agent action reaches production without a human approval step, and every action is logged and traceable. The design principle is AI speed with human control — not AI instead of human oversight.

Acquia DAM AI agents are planned for release later in 2026. If you're an existing Acquia DAM customer, reach out to your Customer Success Manager to learn how to prepare your asset library and governance workflows ahead of launch.

AI agents accelerate the work of organizing and governing your DAM — but they need a framework to work within. Before agents can deliver full value, you need a consistent taxonomy structure, a defined rights framework, and governance rules in place. From there, agents like The Curator and The Guardian take on the ongoing work: enriching metadata, checking rights status, flagging compliance issues, and keeping your library clean as volume scales. The foundation is yours to define. The maintenance becomes theirs.

Yes. Because Acquia DAM is part of a connected platform, its AI agents can operate across applications through an MCP (Model Context Protocol) layer — an open standard for connecting AI agents across tools. This means a DAM agent can hand off an approved, rights-cleared asset to a web publishing workflow or site build in Acquia Source, without manual steps in between.
