AI: Drupal’s Prometheus or Pandora? Defining the Future of the Community
Collection :
The story of the Greek titan Prometheus is one of radical disruption: he stole fire from Mount Olympus, a domain inaccessible to mortals, and brought it down to humankind. This act broke the monopoly of the gods and ushered in a new age of technology and craftsmanship. For the Drupal community, the introduction of AI presents a similar inflection point, a potent technology whose ultimate role—whether a gift of democratization or a box of new digital plagues—is still being defined.
These insights were shared by Frederik Wouters, Head of Innovation at Dropsolid, to kick off Drupal Dev Days in Athens. This discussion is particularly relevant to companies like Acquia, a founding member of Drupal's AI initiative and strong proponents of an ethical adoption of AI tooling, including in our own products. Wouters framed the open-source movement, pioneered by Dries Buytaert, as a moment of democratization comparable to Prometheus bringing fire, noting that Buytaert's work 'democratized CMSs’, a landscape previously dominated by proprietary vendors who kept the magic of content management and intuitive web publishing to a select few. He pointed out that this freedom came with a 'punishment,' much like the eternal plight of Prometheus: 'Every time he has to do security updates, minor updates, major version upgrades... the punishment! And the trust for the user has to be re-earned every time again'.
The promise of AI, guided by the principle of Athena, the goddess of wisdom, is to act as a new hero, a "game access" to free developers, particularly juniors, from the incessant burden of updates and dependencies.
The Prometheus of Efficiency: Democratizing Power
AI is already proving its ability to democratize speed and efficiency, making what was once the exclusive domain of skilled experts accessible to all. It is radically improving efficiency and mobility by lowering the bar and making content editing remarkably easy.
Examples of this democratization are emerging today:
- Accelerating Business: In global logistics, AI can instantly triage emails, route documents, and generate dynamic reports on demand, leading to faster movement of cargo because the information moves faster.
- Zero-Friction Publishing: The idea of moving content creation from managing a CMS to delegating how it works is becoming a reality. We are seeing demonstrations of creating and publishing a blog post—complete with pictures and automatic annotations—from a mobile phone without ever logging into the CMS, eliminating friction entirely.
- The Autonomous CMS: Looking ahead, the promise is a self-improving CMS capable of setting and enforcing rules for legal compliance or inclusive language, offering suggestions to improve content. This evolves into an autonomous content creator that can read legislation, draft a related proposal for a target audience, and wait for editor validation. This kind of ease is what will enable the next generation of users—who know nothing about content types—to jump into Drupal and help grow the community.
The Pandora of Slop: The Risks We Face
The myth of Pandora serves as a stark warning: the introduction of a gift—a beautiful woman created by Zeus—that inevitably unleashes a plague of sorrows, evils, and sicknesses upon the world. For the Drupal community, AI also carries the risk of becoming this box.
The potential plagues include:
- AI Slop and Quality Erosion: AI threatens to introduce "sloppy code" and decrease the quality of the codebase, contributing to burnout. To mitigate this, the essential rule, as emphasized by Wouters, must be followed: 'don't commit what you don't understand'. The danger of thoughtlessly adopting AI-generated code is epitomized by a cartoon Wouters saw: “The average software engineer in 2026 is a monkey accepting everything from Claude, drinking coffee from a tube. It looks funny, But I must admit that I've been sitting in front of my computer late at night, at some point, just accepting what Claude was doing, because the commands were… very long and I think they were right.”
- Security Issues and Burnout: AI could become a "box of security issues," compounding the very problems (updates and dependencies) it is meant to solve.
- Reliance on External Infrastructure: The community must avoid becoming too reliant on a single external source, specifically non-European AI solutions. Wouters provided a stark warning, citing a Dutch saying: 'A donkey doesn't stumble over the same stone twice. That means that if you make the same mistake twice, you're really dumber than a donkey'. He urged the community to actively support European AI to prevent future reliance on hyperscalers.
- Loss of Human Oversight: Above all, it is essential to keep the human in the loop. If human oversight is lost, things will inevitably go wrong, regardless of the quality of the AI tools.
Defining the Outcome: The Community’s Power
The path to success lies in adopting a new flywheel of success, focused on growing the community's share of the "Drupal pie". The key lies in creating an environment where AI is used to lower the barrier to entry (easy migration) and simplify the editorial experience.
The outcome is not predetermined. As a community, we have the power to define whether AI will be our Prometheus, guiding us to a "Drupal inflection point" of growth, or our Pandora, drowning us in slop and new problems.
To ensure the fiery potential of AI is successfully drlivered to the people, the community must focus on collective action:
- Make it Easy to Tell Our Story: It is crucial to spread the message and make it easy for users to talk about their website successes. The dream is to have automated case studies generated by AI, vastly increasing the reach of the Drupal success story.
- Incentivize Sharing Successes: Telling the Drupal story is essential. We should incentivize people to share their AI success stories and best-of-breed approaches, perhaps through a contribution credit system.
- Contribute and Collaborate: Join the Drupal AI initiative as a maintainer, or contribute through sharing best practices, code, marketing stories, or funding.
Together, by managing the risks of Pandora's box and embracing the technology brought by Prometheus, we can win the race and ensure that AI leads to a new era of abundant growth for the Drupal community.
