Drupalcamp LA keynote Saturday - redeye - Drupalcamp New York presentation Sunday

Wow, what a weekend.
I got up around 4:30AM Saturday morning to fly to Los Angeles. My new colleague Brenda Boggs, from the Acquia support team, was kind enough to pick me up at LAX on her way to Drupalcamp LA from San Diego.
Two weeks earlier I met with Crystal Williams, one of the co-organizers of Drupalcamp Los Angeles, in San Francisco. Drupalcamp LA was supposed to be around 200 people. However, it had blown up to 430 registered attendees. Crystal had asked me to present one of the keynotes and now I had to stare out at 400+ people before I had my second cup of coffee!
It was a lot... Mehr

The Drupal taxonomy sprint with the Encyclodpedia of Life at the Chicago field museum

The history of the taxonomy sprint
Back in March 2008, Scott Mattoon, from the Open Architecture Network and Sun, contacted me regarding a TED prize alumni, the Encyclopedia of Life(EOL) who wanted to attend Drupalcon Boston. I was introduced to David Shorthouse, from EOL, and was eager to help the encyclopedia of life adopt Drupal. The TED prize wish video for the EOL project is below.
David Shorthouse and Peter Mangiafico attended Drupalcon Boston to... Mehr

Thrilled to be here

So after 15 years leading several great engineering teams in the IP PBX industry I got a call. A start-up called Acquia was working on being the "Red Hat" of the Open Source Drupal project, and looking for someone to manage engineering using the Scrum / Agile process. While I never heard of Drupal, it was worth a look since Scrum is a passion of mine, and I believe the Red Hat model makes sense.
After downloading Drupal, I created a small site and spent a few days reading posts on d.o. while my jaw slowly dropped to the floor. I was b-l-o-w-n away by Drupal's extensibility as a platform,... Mehr

Szeged Usability Sprint - a HUGE success.

Szeged Usability Sprint - a HUGE success.
I wanted to genuinely thank everyone who participated in the usability sprint - particularly Roy for setting it up. The outcome was fantastic!
Together we targeted 4 problematic areas defined by the two usability tests and crafted high-level solutions for each. Item 3 got dismantled due to language barriers, but the others made significant progress. Item 2 resulted in a patch.
1. Night of the disappearing help page (http://groups.drupal.org/node/14387)
2. Where did my content go (... Mehr

Does SAP use Drupal? Yes!

Thanks to a comment on by a developer from Mikamai on my other blog, I stumbled across a link to WikiSAP. It's a social network for members of the SAP community in Italy.

ZDNet Names Drupal as a Top Community Platform

Dion Hinchcliffe over at ZDNet has named Drupal as one of the top ten leading platforms for creating online communities, one small notch behind Joomla. The first part of Dion's post explains the current state of online community building practices and technology. Dion does a lot of consulting with top companies seeking to build communities around their products and services, and his insights are on target.
Although I would have put Drupal in the #1 spot, I really like Dion's brief description of Drupal:

Drupal is one of the darlings of the community world and would come first on this list... Mehr

additional points:
- Much of the code has unit tests (simpletest, php-mock-functions w/o runkit)
- Code was designed to be... Mehr

Drupalcon Szeged code, docs, usability sprint on Sunday

On Sunday the Drupalcon organizers arranged for a code sprint at the excellent József Attila Study and Information Centre. What a difference great infrastructure makes to the productivity of a day of sprinting. The work area was the open birds of a feather lounge on the third floor. This was an ideal work area that was big enough to hold over 100 people but also allow for divided areas where we could cluster into work groups. The wireless was flawless thanks to some excellent work from the Drupalcon... Mehr

Drupal rocks libraries

I have been meeting a lot of interesting people on the road, and lately it's been librarians. It turns out that a lot of libraries love Drupal. I've put together a showcase video of libraries that use Drupal. Next time you are at your library, make sure you share this video with your local librarian.
Andy Austin and Chris Austin have recently released a Drupal overview in the May/June edition of library technology reports. More details on the front page of Drupal.org.... Mehr

Dries at Foo Camp

Duane Nickull was on my evangelism team when I worked at Adobe. As you'll see in the Adobe TV video embedded below, Duane is one of those colorful characters who make working in the tech industry a lot of fun. He has eclectic interests and seems to know everyone in the industry.
Duane caught up with Dries at Foo Camp last month and pulled him aside for a quick interview you'll see in the first segment of the video. Dries gives a quick overview about Drupal, what Acquia is doing to broaden Drupal adoption. He also explains how Mollom works to block content spam.
After the Dries segment,... Mehr

The DX Files: Abandon Anonymous Arrays of Attributes

This is part three of my series, The DX Files: Improving Drupal Developer Experience. This time, I’m suggesting changing some of Drupal’s most basic data structures and APIs by replacing anonymous arrays with well-defined data structures. I fully expect lots of disagreement.

Drupal at LinuxWorld in San Francisco

We had over a dozen volunteers from the South Bay, San Francisco, and Berkeley group at the Drupal booth. We also had at least four people ask about a North Bay group. One of the problems when you have so many fun and interesting people working at your booth is you start talking to them instead of all the people who are looking at you with the "What's a Drupal?" look. But we did a great job talking to hundreds of people in three days and I believe that this will help to grow Drupal usage in both the Bay Area and the broader Linux community.
Fortunately, the Joomla folks Ryan, Louis, and... Mehr

Confessions of a Drupal Convert

Kurt Cagle over at O'Reilly has finally come clean:
"I have a confession to make - after close to a decade covering XML, I have something of a new love ... and the name of that love is Drupal. Drupal's become one of those interesting hobbies that is rapidly becoming both a profession and a passion. It wasn't supposed to happen this way ..."
His article is titled "Drupal as Open Architecture" and it is very worth a read, especially if you are a techie new to Drupal.  He goes beyond the confession to... Mehr

Drupal booth babes
