Voices of Drupal Camp Alpe-Adria 2013

Here are the highlights from a few of the conversations I had with attendees of the 2013 Drupal Camp Alpe-Adria, held in April in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The camp was a wild success and attracted a large, international crowd. I'll post a couple more interviews I did at this event in coming weeks.

Hey developers ~ new, experienced or otherwise, undecided!

DrupalCon Portland is just around the corner — have you thought about the week and what you want to accomplish? Keynotes, sessions, a new job, and "people to see" are certainly popular options. As one colleague put it, "Spending time with all the cool, smart people that I talk to online." Maybe just making sure you have some of these ten things to bring with you to Con is all you can muster right now.
If you're attending, here's the... Mehr

Top 3 Ways to Ensure Your Outbound Sales Team Isn’t Sent Home Crying

The buyer’s journey is changing. Sales and Marketing used to be able to control their brand’s messaging and value proposition through the limited number of mass communication channels (such as network TV, commercial radio, newspapers, and even email, website, and banner advertising into the mid-2000s). Social media and other forms of user-generated content, though, have revolutionized how buyers research, evaluate, and select business partners. In fact, Sirius Decisions says that as much as 70% of the buyer’s journey now happens... Mehr

Listening to your own marketing or your vendor’s?

Let's look at the hot topic of personalization. I get enquiries about this, almost on a daily basis. And I fully agree that it can be a powerful tool to engage customers and increase your conversion rate. But before you go into the perilous journey of personalization you need to get all of the other things right. Why would you personalize content when your content sucks? Bad content is bad content, personalized or not! Why would you personalize content when your team cannot deal with the overhead of managing this? It will end up annoying your customers and have an adverse effect on conversion... Mehr

Adobe Just Killed Traditional Software Licensing

At today’s Adobe Max Conference, Adobe announced that they would stop selling traditional shrink-wrap licenses of Adobe Creative Suite products – Photoshop, Flash, Dreamweaver, etc. Now it’s all about the Creative Cloud and its subscription-licensing model. You can no longer buy the Adobe Creative Suite; you can only subscribe to the Creative Cloud as a monthly or annual subscription.
In other words, Adobe just... Mehr

Let's Get Personal: The Basics

Personalization is as old as marketing itself. Give each customer what they want, how they want it, when they want it. New technologies, platforms, and devices give us the tools to reinvent this venerable approach, expanding its reach and effectiveness. To wring the maximum value out of personalization, you have to track your results, constantly re-evaluate what you are doing, and adjust your strategy accordingly. In Part One of this 5-part series on personalization, we'll start with the broad strokes.

Agile Software Development – Cracking the Code

Part of the "All the things you need to know to be a great Drupal developer" blog series
Cassette, VCR, disposable cameras, pager, dial-in Internet, CD’s, CD-player, maps, encyclopedia, waterfall model for software development etc. Well this list represents things that make us nostalgic and remind us of the ugly truth of how things quickly become obsolete in the agile world of technology.
Agile methodology is one of those things that grew out of obsolescence. It was an evolution for software teams to finally move from the conventional waterfall model to something that was more dynamic. In an... Mehr

How-to configure faceted search interface with Acquia Search

Implementing grade-A site search functionality is not easy to achieve. Proprietary search solution tend to carry very expensive licensing fees and provide limited flexibility when integrated with open source solutions such as Drupal. Conversely, open source search engines such as Apache Solr are devoid of licensing fees and have tight integration with CMSes like Drupal, however they can also be challenging to deploy and maintain. Acquia Search provides the power and flexibility of open source while eliminating the maintenance tax.
Acquia Search is a fully managed SaaS offering that integrates... Mehr

The Death of Enterprise Software?

Last week, IBM announced disappointing earnings, which caused the biggest decline for IBM shares in eight years. IBM lost $19 billion in market value. IBM’s drop follows Oracle, who also reported disappointing earnings in its last quarter.
Both companies had a similar explanation for why the numbers were down - a shortfall in sales execution in their software businesses. Really?
It’s always easy to blame sales people for poor performance. But are we expected to believe that the same sales team who delivered consistent performance in the past is now to blame for a huge revenue miss? Or are... Mehr
