Acquia Cloud: by developers, for developers

As a Drupal developer for 7 years, I’ve shed plenty of (mostly figurative) blood, sweat, and tears over the sites and modules I’ve built. At Acquia, I work on our Cloud tools, making sure my fellow developers never have to worry about many of the issues I used to deal with constantly. There are three basic areas where Acquia Cloud makes developers’ lives better.
“Don’t make me think about hosting”
The Acquia Cloud platform is fully managed, meaning you don’t have... Mehr

“Content is Critical to Brand Differentiation” said everybody at shop.org.

If I had to choose one theme of this year’s shop.org annual summit, it would be ‘Content, Content, Content’. The summit started with REI CEO Jerry Stritzke where he described REI as a Storytelling Company. Starting with the brand’s origins as a community of climbers, he described the passion for the brand held by consumers and employees alike, with the passion fitting of the brand he described. He talked about REI.com as a ‘Catalyst for Discovery’ and his desire to make the site more than just a... Mehr

Password protecting non-production environments

Protecting your staging and development environments is nearly as important as protecting your production server. There are several ways to do this, including adding modules to your sites or modifying your settings.php file.
Add a module
The preferred method of website protection is to add either the Secure Site module or the Shield module to password protect your website. While both modules offer this basic protection feature, the Search Site module... Mehr

Handling the waves of Shellshock

2014 has been a busy year for the open source security world. First there was Heartbleed, with multiple security problems discovered in OpenSSL, then last week’s Bash Shellshock and Xen vulnerabilities made mainstream news, requiring a large portion of the Internet to be patched or rebooted.
Acquia’s mantra is “we won’t let you fail”, and this past week... Mehr

Why we’re dropping the “e” in eCommerce. And why you should too.

The rise of m-commerce, the struggles with social-commerce, the growing maturity of e-commerce, the integration of technology into physical commerce… it can be, no it is, overwhelming. As marketers, we feel the need to distinguish between the different types of platforms consumers use to research and purchase products. We have mobile teams responsible for developing shopping apps, and optimizing the mobile experience. We have social teams responsible for increasing engagement through social channels, promoting product and, sometimes, trying to figure out how to crack the code on social... Mehr

Tips for Transitioning from Waterfall to Agile

There are many different project management methodologies out there and they all have their pros and cons. I recently started at Acquia as an Engagement Manager and have been making the shift from more Waterfall project management to Agile project management. Here are a few key lessons I’ve learned as I make this transition.
1. Agile Methods:

Open source Drupal and government in the UK - 2014

Impressions and Acquia's presentation from the 2014 Government ICT 2.0 conference in London.

Practically a road show ...

Open source Drupal is doing well in public service. It is empowering government agencies, NGOs, and educational institutions to make a positive difference in the world. Riding this wave, I am thrilled to have the chance to speak at four (sort of 5) government-related conferences in 2014: The Australian Government CTO, John Sheridan, and I were the keynote speakers at DrupalGov in Canberra; I gave an Acquia presentation... Drupal core updates for September 18th, 2014

What's new with Drupal 8?
The big news this week is we're still on one beta-blocker. Patches for the remaining beta blocker are coming rapidly with @effulgentsia, @plach and @fago working hard to get it over the line. Could we have zero beta blockers by DrupalCon?
Other keys issues to land this week include Remove ArrayAccess from FormState - never again deal with random arrays - rejoice - $form_state is a first-class object!. Thanks to @timplunkett and others who helped get this through. If you have any contrib projects accessing $form_state... Mehr

Troubleshooting Using the Log Streaming UI

Things change over time. For an updated version of this blog post, visit its associated article on the Acquia Help Center!
When under a tight development schedule, site builders often feel the pain of scavenging through dozens of log files across separate servers when trying to diagnose an issue. Acquia's log streaming tool makes it easy to identify problems in real time by showing you what log messages are generated exactly when specific actions are being performed.
Example Uses

Drupal 8 developer experience wins, the PHP Renaissance and more with Angie Byron

Part 2 of a 2-part conversation with Angie Byron in front of the cameras at NYC Camp 2014, held at United Nations headquarters in New York. In this part of our conversation, we talk about improvements in the Drupal developer- and learning-experience thanks to the major changes under the hood in Drupal 8; the "PHP Renaissance"; and about being welcomed "back into the fold" of the greater PHP world thanks to the nature of Drupal 8 being a sort of "meta project" (my words) that includes parts of many others.

In the first part of our... Mehr

Acquia + You: Keeping Sites Online and Performant

On Acquia’s Support team, we see all sorts of issues every day. Many are unique to the particular purpose and configuration of a site, but there are a variety of issues that can appear on even the most well-built and meticulously maintained web applications. We see these often enough that they are among the first things we look for when a site goes down or begins to experience specific symptoms, and we are often able to resolve them quickly precisely because we have learned from experience what will and what will not work.
Our experiences also help us understand what kinds of obstacles can... Mehr

1st Drupal memory: "I tried Drupal 5 (at the time I had my own Java-based CMS), it was not a good memory because you load it and Boom! you have nothing ... :-) ... I didn't get the idea of Drupal that you have to add modules to add functionality. I admit I didn't try very hard; I just quit." ...... Mehr

Transforming the Media and Entertainment Industry with Drupal

I’ll admit it. I was initially a skeptic.
My colleague at NBCUniversal, Chris Herring, really wanted me to attend DrupalCon Chicago. It was 2011, and many of the developers and product managers across NBCUniversal had started to advocate passionately for Drupal. Chris really wanted me to experience firsthand the community and all it had to offer.
We’d historically been a ‘build it ourselves’ type shop, but he convinced... Mehr

Custom Distributions on Acquia Cloud: Part 1 -- Drush Make

Every developer has a slightly different approach to building their Drupal sites. I’ve tried just about every approach, and they all have their merits, but my favorite is Drush Make. Before joining Acquia, I didn’t realize Acquia Cloud supported Drush Make, but I was delighted to discover that I was wrong. Assuming I’m not the only person who had missed this fact, I wanted to spend a little time highlighting where this exists and how I’m using it.
Getting to the Goods... Mehr

Become Acquia Back end Specialist Certified!

Back in July we gathered several members of our customer success team to create a new Drupal backend developer certification exam in our Reading, UK office. This group comprised of a unique mix of people working on large scale Drupal implementations. They are not used used to teaching, architecting and developing in Drupal but also have large exposure troubleshooting problems produced by bad configurations or poorly developed code.
We wanted to cover different areas of expertise that are typically needed for a skilled backend developer in order to develop custom modules, integrations with... Mehr

Michael E. Meyers, VP Large Scale Drupal at Acquia, knows better than most how contributing to the open source project you are relying on to build or improve your business will pay off. He and his team did just that when they successfully built and sold NowPublic.com – the first venture capital funded, Drupal-based startup – while making massive contributions to the Drupal project along the way.

He and I invite you not only to use Drupal, but also to make it better and to get involved with its community. If you're only using it without... Mehr

Web services in Drupal 8 Core

Some of the great news in Drupal 8 development was the introduction of web services directly in core, allowing other applications to interact with Drupal to consume exposed information or services without the need to install contributed modules.
Let’s look at the list of modules that ship with D8 core related with web services:

RESTful Web Services module in core exposes entities in different defined endpoints, while Serialization module allow to serialize entities in formats like HAL+JSON, XML, JSON. I will basically use these four modules in this blog post together with Rest UI (... Mehr

The Case for Drupal at Small and Mid-Sized Colleges

Drupal is used to run some of the largest web sites at some of the largest universities in the world. Massive institutions like University of Minnesota (64,000 students), Ohio State University (65,000 students), Austin Community College (70,000 students), King Khalid University (75,000 students), Arizona State University (80,000 students), and even University of Phoenix (250,000 students), employ Drupal to power some portion (if not all) of their digital strategy and they see Drupal as a valuable differentiator in their effort to enhance the online experience for all their constituents.
