The Best CMS for AI Agents

Scott Falconer, who leads Drupal as an open source product at Acquia and serves on the Drupal AI initiative team, tells a story that starts before Acquia. In 2001, Dries Buytaert created Drupal and released it as open source. Dries calls it his accidental advantage; Scott sees vision. That decision invited people in, and the community turned a simple message board into the foundation for some of the largest digital experiences in the world.

Scott traces how enterprise pressure shaped Drupal over two decades. Universities, governments, and global media organizations demanded multilingual content, permissions, integrations, structured content, scale, and security. By 2007, names like MTV and Sony were running on Drupal, and Acquia was created to help large organizations succeed at scale. That power came with complexity, so the community chose to disrupt itself with Drupal CMS, Drupal Canvas, and Drupal AI, making the platform easier to adopt without trading away its strength.

Then AI arrived as a far bigger disruption, changing how teams build, how agencies deliver, and how open source itself works. Scott's central argument is that the foundation was already here. The structure, permissions, content models, and governance that once felt heavy are exactly what AI agents need to act safely and reliably. Generation is no longer a differentiator; governance is. That, he argues, is why Drupal can credibly claim to be the best content management system for agents. Watch to understand why Drupal today is not the Drupal you may remember.
