Matt Townsend – Strategy Director, AKQA NZ

Matt Townsend

A background in psychology specialising in behavioural and cognitive has helped him focus an interest in user behaviour. Much of the focus of Matt’s work today is on the role that digital plays in connecting the dots between the organisation and end users (customers, clients, internal teams etc). Taking a user-centred approach to strategy, much of Matt’s work involves working with internal client stakeholders and end users to understand needs and translate these into digital initiatives. Matt works closely with the XD and data leads to ensure our strategies translate into actionable, measurable outcomes. Over a 20-year career in digital, Matt has worked across a vast range of clients, industries, platforms and digital channels. Most recently, Matt’s work has focused on clients such as New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, Trustpower, Tourism Fiji, as well as smaller client engagements across a range of B2C and B2B business models. Other recent client engagements include projects for Air New Zealand, Fletcher Building, Silver Fern Farms and Aotearoa Fisheries.

Nel Johnson – Experience & Design Director, AKQA NZ

Nel Johnson

Nel is a user-focused, insight-driven digital practitioner with over 30 year’s experience across all aspects of agency services including creative development, user experience, content creation, research & insight, and digital marketing. As XD director, he is tasked with building long-term customer/brand relationships through the clever use of current and emergent digital technologies, a role which requires a keen understanding of user needs and behaviours across web, mobile and virtual. Prior to leaving the UK in 2012, Nel was head of user experience at top 10 European agency Amaze, where he led design and UX for a stable of global brands including Coca-Cola, Lexus, Unilever, BBC, and Bridgestone. Nel also spent several years in the UK working in film, TV and music. His work has been recognised with numerous industry awards including a BAFTA Interactive.
