Established in 1942, Voice of America (VOA) is a U.S. government-funded, state-owned multimedia agency which serves as the United States federal government's official institution for non-military, external broadcasting. It produces and distributes digital, TV, and radio content in more than 40 languages.
To increase global audience engagement, Voice of America needed to create a mission-critical content management platform that would be capable of providing journalists with intuitive content that could be regionally optimized.
VOA’s previous platform was a legacy, custom-built system that was outdated. Enhancements were difficult for content editors to make.
In partnership with Mobomo, Voice of America developed a best-of-breed content management platform by utilizing a Decoupled Drupal architecture on Acquia Site Factory. This approach provided an out-of-the-box solution for management and replication of multiple independent sites on a single platform, which made it easy for Voice of America to launch in to launch multiple language sites quickly and manage them all on a single code base.
Finally, Acquia Personalization and Content Hub provided content syndication capabilities, enabling content sharing between Voice of America’s numerous sites. This meant quick language translation of new posts in a coordinated and efficient manner.
The platform and redesigned website was launched in English and provides a fresh, engaging design, progressive web app capabilities, and two 24/7 video streams and four 24/7 audio streams. Development and enhancements are being deployed on a weekly basis on a continuous integration/continuous development approach, and five other language sites (Persian, Russian, Mandarin, Spanish, and Korean) are being migrated to the platform this year. Ultimately the platform will consolidate 43 different language sites and include over sixy 24/7 live broadcasting streams.
