Newell Brands, a 116-year-old maker, marketer and distributor of consumer and commercial products, has over 95 brands in its portfolio including Rubbermaid storage and trash containers, home organization and reusable container products, Coleman outdoor products, First Alert alarm systems, Calphalon cookware and kitchen electrics, and many more.
Newell’s brands needed to be able to build their own sites from a bespoke Drupal distribution. But the company didn’t have a digital toolkit that would make this possible. It decided to create a toolkit that covered all of the integrations, tools and unique requirements for each of its 95+ brands while also streamlining governance and reducing technical debt.

Moreover, many of these brands had unique integrations and technological requirements that needed to be identified, assessed and accounted for in the larger Newell-specific Drupal distribution, without overwhelming or bloating the toolkit.
At the beginning of the process, all of Newell’s brands were running different technology stacks. To ensure that every brand’s unique needs were accommodated, the Newell in-house team began the process of crafting a design system from the ground up that would encompass every requirement. Newell tapped FFW for help, and the teams determined that an Acquia stack would be the ideal foundation for the scalable, global toolkit. Acquia Professional Services began building out the solution, and once the groundwork was laid, FFW and Newell’s other partners began the process of scaling it out into the toolkit.
