The Rise of the DevOps movement

DevOps, DevOps, DevOps … the whole world is talking about DevOps, but
what is DevOps?
Since Munich 2012, DrupalCon had a dedicated devops track. After talking to
a lot of people in Prague last month, I realized that the concept of DevOps is still very unclear to a lot of developers. To a large part of the development community, DevOps development still means folks working on 'the infrastructure part' of the development life cycle and for some it just means simply deploying Drupal, being concerned about purely keeping the site alive etc.
Obviously that's not what DevOps is about, so let's... Meer

BADcamp 2013 - What to expect?

We’re ready to Rock! BADcamp 2013 Preview!
We’re 3 days away from BADcamp 2013 and we could not be more excited. What is BADcamp? BADcamp stands for the Bay Area Drupal camp - an annual event that happens in Berkeley California where local Drupalists get together over four days of summits, sprints, trainings, sessions, BOFs, networking, parties and more.
I’m particularly excited about this year’s BADcamp because we’re making a big splash. The incredible bunch of Drupalists and engineers we have at Acquia never ceases to amaze me. Passion for Drupal, Open Source and the community rides high in... Meer

There are some excellent improvements to modeling data in Drupal 8, including a number of new fields. This is going to make it easier to model content in Drupal. Let’s look at the image handling in Drupal 8 and what changes are in store. In this post we'll look at:

The image field in Drupal 8
Inline images — the tradeoff
Drupal 8’s WYSIWYG editor

Investing in the Big Idea: Prototyping with Drupal

You have a Big Idea. Your Big Idea is going to change the way your agency works. Your Big Idea involves using technology to increase citizen engagement / be more efficient / collaborate internally / share data / do something awesome.
You need to convince your department to invest in this Big Idea. Should you:
A. Create a presentation with lots of slides, bullet points, charts, and clip art
B. Create a presentation with a few slides, giant words, and quirky pictures. Deliver it TED-talk style.
C. Build a prototype
If you want a chance at getting your Big Idea off the ground, pick C. Here’s why... Meer

Next steps for how Acquia plans to give back to Drupal 8 in Q4

People wonder what we do at Acquia's Office of the CTO (OCTO). In order to provide some more transparency, I wanted to share how we plan to give back between today and the end of the year.
Drupal 8 beta 1
Now that we're forgoing an upgrade path for a migration path, we need to redefine the release criteria for 'beta 1'. We also need to track the issues that block beta in order to help escalate the most critical of the critical issues. We will work with... Meer

Inbound Marketing Summit Boston Day 1 Recap

After 19 presentations and a keynote by Razorfish CTO Ray Velez, day 1 of Inbound Marketing Summit Boston is complete. Personalization, omnichannel marketing and social were hot topics today, but I want to discuss some of the presentations that impressed me the most.
Right off the bat, Velez urged the crowd to really think about effective content marketing and to remember that a good marketer no longer is in the business of selling stuff, but instead should be focusing on the needs of the customer. But what really made his... Meer

This week in Drupal Core: October 16th 2013

Welcome to the fourth edition of this week in Drupal core!
What's new in Drupal 8?
This week saw a large number of bug fixes and cleanup task as we work hard cleaning up our APIs and codebase for a beta release. The next alpha (alpha4) is slated for October 18th since it has been a while since alpha3 was released and also in order to have something stable to port modules from during the various sprints/sessions at BADCamp. There are... Meer

Oracle's Love/Hate Relationship with Open Source

Matt Asay, a long time open source evangelist with over a decade of experience at companies like MongoDB, Canonical, and Alfresco, posted a great article in response to a new white paper on Open Source published by Oracle. (By the way, do people still read whitepapers?)
Oracle wrote this whitepaper for the US Department of Defense, and... Meer

Building APIs for Government Agencies with Drupal

Since President Obama took office in 2009, the United States government has been releasing data and building APIs as part of the Open Government Initiative. On May 9, 2013, the President signed Executive Order 13642, Making Open and Machine Readable the New Default for Government Information, mandating that "the default state of new and modernized Government information... Tutorial: Drupal 8 Sitebuilding - Modeling data with Fields

Sitebuilders will be able to do much more with Drupal 8 right out of the box. There are many excellent enhancements you'll want to know more about.
Because new Drupal adopters will have the essential functionality of the most popular contributed modules to use, I think this is going to make Drupal easier to discover and learn. As the manager of our training program here at Acquia, I think it's going to make training much more... Meer

Don’t Let Your Best Day Be Your Worst Day

The launch of healthcare.gov has brought a tidal wave of criticism. Some say the code was buggy, others blame the servers, and still others blame the user experience. While we may not be able to pinpoint exactly what went wrong in this build, one thing is certain: What should have been a great day for many Americans became the worst day for the technology providers behind healthcare.gov.
In the past week, I’ve been asked a few times if the site is built in Drupal (no), if Acquia was involved (no), and what could have been done to avoid this situation.
The latter question is one that requires... Meer

A Shopping Cart is Not an eCommerce Solution

"Cross-posted from Blink Reaction"
I have seen the future of eCommerce, and the future is good, but only for some people.
I teach Drupal. A lot. Often when I talk about Drupal I talk about how some people never leave their comfort zone to learn new things. Sometimes I make wise cracks about Flash or ColdFusion. Everyone gets the joke. Soon I'll be joking about standalone shopping carts. I think most people will get that joke too.
It's not that many shopping cart services aren't good. In fact, many are excellent. eCommerce is one of the more mature areas of the internet - after all - selling... Meer

Acquia Cloud is the CMS Critic 2013 Winner for Best Cloud CMS

Today, Acquia was named the 2013 People's Choice Winner for Best Cloud CMS by CMS Critic. Cloud CMS was a new category added in 2013, to recognize the momentum of the modern, cloud-native CMS, like Acquia Cloud. From the announcement:
For a cloud CMS to be effective, the services need to be managed well, offer regular updates and security maintenance, have excellent technical support and high availability. These are separate from the typical requirements of a standard CMS and... Meer

"One million served" - Drupal.org

On October 10, 2013, the one millionth member registered on Drupal.org. What does this mean?

One million members on Drupal.org - achievement unlocked!

This number is a reminder of the Drupal platform's maturity. Drupal is a mainstream content management system, powers 1 in 50 sites on the web, and makes a difference to many people's lives. All of the work done by every community member in the last 14 years or so got us here, from Dries's university dorm room to today's – this morning’s – patches.... Meer

Writing loosely-coupled code is the path to great DX in Drupal 8

[This post brings together some of the ideas presented in my DrupalCon Portland talk on Dependency Injection and ideas presented in Mark Sonnabaum's DrupalCon Prague talk on writing unit-testable code]
D8 now comes with PHPUnit, a unit testing framework for PHP. Many tests in core are being converted to unit tests: at the time of writing there are 845 tests making 1992 assertions and it takes... Meer
