Drupal on the Front lines: Being a Consultant at Acquia
by Erik Webb
I have now been a Technical Consultant at Acquia for two years. In those two years I have seen Acquia quadruple in size and the size and importance of our clients grow from primarily mid-sized universities and smaller government agencies to multiple Fortune 100 clients, cabinet-level government offices, and giant media companies. When meeting with others in the community, few people have any idea what it is that Acquia's consultants do (or that we even exist). I'd like to attempt to explain what we do and why I love my job!
Let's start by summarizing my job with numbers -
- Over 4 dozen clients across 23 states and provinces
- 125,000 miles flown
- 300 nights stayed in hotels
And now a map of my client travels -
I came to Acquia with a good background in Drupal, but primarily experienced in systems administration and enterprise PHP application development. Since joining Acquia, I have not only substantially increased my Drupal knowledge, but continue to expand my experience in many other areas as well. My role as a consultant allows me to do a little bit of everything and push the limit of my own abilities and learn new things every day.
In every corner of the country across any vertical, my days range from training brand new Drupal users what a "module" or "View" is to optimizing hundreds of co-hosted Drupal sites receiving hundreds of millions of visitors per month. As a whole I provide what I like to call "project lifecycle services" - I do not build sites for clients, but instead serve as a sanity check and advisor to make sure projects succeed throughout the planning and development stages all the way through launch. Clients expect my skill set to range from classroom training to project discovery to security and performance expertise. I am always happy to put to work such a wide array of expertise on a daily basis. It not only keeps my job interesting every day - it also keeps me learning!
In summary Acquia's consultants are on the front lines of growing Drupal's community by introducing new clients and maturing current Drupal users. We are actively hiring Technical Consultants and we would love for you to join our team!
