Acquia Cloud delivers scalability and support keeping pace with world events
Al-Masry Al-Youm, Egypt’s largest independent daily newspaper is committed to being the leader in free press and keeping Egyptians informed.
They also offer readers a subscription based service as well as news service. Members can contribute via this community to post stories, upload videos and photos. Their free press objective and timely journalism has propelled them to be the most influential news source in Egypt. This success has not come without its challenges.
With the onset of the revolution and political changes that occurred in Egypt in 2011, it was critical for Al-Masry to build a highly available, secure website to deliver their news and engage community members through the real-people’s news forum. Downtime was not an option with their reputation and their bottom line at stake.
“Downtime is not an option in the online news industry, customers want information immediately. With traffic increasing with the impending elections, it was critical to find a solution that delivered.”
– Hossam Bayoumy, Project Manager, Al-Masry
Prior to moving to Acquia Cloud, Al-Masry hosted and managed their site directly with their provider. Additionally, only one person on their team was trained and had the skills to manage the infrastructure. As a result, when their site went down it was for long periods of time.
Days before the first democratic elections in November of 2011 the site had a major outage with their existing infrastructure. At that time Acquia was scheduled to commence a four-week process of migrating the Al-Masry site to Acquia Cloud, when they kicked into high gear to bring forward the migration and stabilize the site in time for the elections. The depth of knowledge and aptitude on the Acquia Support team coupled with the Cloud infrastructure enabled Al-Masry to recover within 24-hours and continue to deliver the news during this important period in Egyptian politics.
“Acquia dedicated a team of experts for us overnight – and everyone in the team was 100% focused and understood the level of urgency. They worked over a long period, during late hours and on a national holiday; they were moving through tasks efficiently and were communicating effectively. All of this made the move a success and brought us back online.” – Hossam Bayoumy, Al-Masry Al-Youm
Al-Masry Al-Youm initially sought Acquia’s assistance to address issues of site performance and security. Prior to the scheduled migration to their Acquia Cloud service, Acquia stepped into resolve a major site failure. And while their initial experience with Acquia was a tremendous success, the relationship continues to grow. Acquia is always on the ready to help when they need it, but Al-Masry has quickly learned to leverage the tools available in Acquia Network, including Insight, New Relic and SEO Grader to proactively troubleshoot issues on the site and optimize to attract more visitors.
“Acquia’s SEO Grader doesn’t just give us a rating number, but also provides an action list of what to fix and suggested configurations and modules” – Hossam Bayoumy, Al-Masry Al-Youm
Al-Masry continues to improve and expand their web properties as well as their customer base. They have added additional sites, including http://sharek.almasryalyoum.com, to Acquia Cloud. This is a new site for community reporting and geo-tagging of any violation of electoral law.
This has been the beginning of a long-term partnership between Acquia and Al-Masry Al-Youm with a strong, stable foundation that will help them successfully scale their business with confidence.
