Impossible to Catch

Rasmus Lerdorf, the creator of PHP, commented in an interview with France's leading newspaper Le Monde, that "it will be practically impossible to create today a proprietary alternative to Drupal". The remarks were in the context of the evolution of open source in the market.

Lerdorf backs this up by highlighting that in the server infrastructure layer today, open source dominates. "There are several server application areas where a proprietary solution isn't even available".

Drupal also represents a new phenomenon in open source, one where superior innovation is driving adoption and better economics are enjoyed. Earlier open source projects like jBoss and MySQL were effectively offering superior economics, usually in a plug compatible configuration with a proprietary alternative. With Drupal, it's the proprietary systems that are chasing features and functionality. I blogged about this in an earlier post: "Innovation is at the Heart of Open Source".

With the massive Drupal community continuing to innovate, we like its odds and agree with Mr. Lerdorf that Drupal is going to be hard to beat.
