5 Ways Drupal is Like Public Transportation

I love public transportation. I happily ride Washington D.C.’s Metro to and from work every day. I take the bus to yoga. I think transit maps are art. I share photos, via Twitter and Facebook, of the outrageous things transit riders do. I am a public transportation enthusiast.

So I am especially pleased that Acquia has joined the American Public Transportation Association (APTA). This new affiliation complements our work with agencies like the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and San Francisco’s Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART), where we’ve used Drupal to make transit information more reliable, resilient, and accessible.

In honor of this announcement, I present: 5 Ways Drupal is Like Public Transportation:

1. Drupal is supported by the community: Just like public transportation is supported by the community of riders, citizens, and businesses that benefit from the service, so too is Drupal supported by its user community. Of course, there are no fare cards or turnstyles on are strictly voluntary.

2.Security is everyone’s responsibility: We’re told to keep our eyes out for suspicious packages while riding the Metro and report anything we see to the transit police. Similarly, Drupal developers report security vulnerabilities they spot while working with the code to the Drupal security team. In this way, Drupal combines open with security.

3. Drupal is infrastructure: Public transportation connects the business district with the theater district with the school system and the suburbs. Drupal connects diverse systems in an organization to create the next generation digital infrastructure. Using Drupal, organizations can link together best-of-breed tools like stops on a train line.

4. Drupal powers commerce: Businesses flourish around train stations and along bus routes because public transit makes it easy for people to get there. Drupal does the same thing. Drupal helps businesses serve integrated content that is accessible across multiple devices. Connecting content with customers is how Drupal helps businesses succeed.

5. Drupal connects people: Public transportation connects people with their jobs, schools, doctors’ offices, shopping centers, and friends. Similarly, Drupal Commons connects people through online communities of all kinds: consumer communities, collaborative learning communities, health research communities, and company intranets, to name but a few.
