Open Data - A new birth of Freedom
by Scott Davis
Whether FOIA, or local equivalent (we call it OPRA here in New Jersey), the demand for public access to information from our government - that should be in theory if not in practice "of the people, by the people, for the people" - remains stronger than ever before.
In fact, various Open Data initiatives affirm this. Transparency in all aspects is crucial for effective governance, and ultimately, accountability. Classified material aside: data MUST flow freely between any government and its citizens.
An engaged populace produces better solutions for all involved. And when coupled with newer technologies, they can positively impact our lives in ways difficult to imagine otherwise.
Among several solutions in this category, DKAN is already gaining momentum. What better way to implement your website AND provide access to data, all thru a unified Drupal-based portal?
