Low-cost Drupal website brings high-end rewards for Kansas City non-profit

The journey from a dimly lit photo of a young woman with a blank stare to the smiling young man at the top of the homepage is a metaphor for the hope that Higher M-Pact brings to troubled teens, but also mirrors the journey of Higher M-Pact’s online presence.
Higher M-Pact’s website enables visitors to learn how the non-profit helps high-risk urban youths strive for a better future. They did this by intervening sooner rather than later with these youths to motivate, engage and inspire. Obstacles are turned into opportunities, and a community comes together to build a brighter future for all of those involved.
Higher M-Pact knew it needed to grab readers’ attention and convert them into volunteers, partners, or donors. It needed a site that it could update with photos, events, and news to stay relevant to donors and community leaders. Without the budget for an expensive content management system, Higher M-Pact partnered with VML, which extended Drupal modules to create a high-quality solution at minimal cost.
“Modules let a smaller organization get a good website up quickly and at a low cost. Drupal is open source and free, yet extremely powerful and extensible,” said Todd Greathouse, technical architect at VML. “It lets the client use their money for the development, the design, and customization instead of spending it all up front on licensing fees.”
With this new interface, Higher M-Pact regularly updates its website to stay relevant to the community and has seen an immense increase in support and donations. Potential volunteers are contacting Higher M-Pact immediately after viewing the site, and the non-profit has made new partnerships to further its mission.
“This website has just taken Higher M-Pact to another level,” Higher M-Pact executive director Renee Flowers said.
Though the site has earned awards for its innovative design, for Flowers the biggest success is that the site is raising more awareness about their cause and bringing in new donations and partnerships.
“A lot of times you see immediate gratification through the awards, but the impact that this website will have on generations -- and really our kids -- is the biggest part that touches us.”
