Acquia Raises More Than $17,500 for the Movember Foundation
Acquia employees join forces to help fight men’s cancers
Woburn, MA – December 1, 2010 – Acquia, the company accelerating the adoption of open source social publishing, today announced, it has raised more than $17,500 for the Movember Foundation. At release time Acquia’s team Fu ManDrupal’s is ranked number 32 nationally of more than 100 teams. The funds raised through Movember’s US campaign benefit the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) and LIVESTRONG, the Lance Armstrong Foundation.
Movember challenges men to change their appearance and the face of men’s health by growing a moustache. The rules are simple, start Movember 1st clean-shaven and then grow a moustache for the entire month. The moustache becomes the ribbon for men’s health, the means by which awareness and funds are raised for cancers that affect men. (source us.movemberfoundation.com)
Peter Guagenti vice-president, services, ignited Acquia’s participation in Movember. Peter challenged fellow Acquian’s to join forces in support of men’s health, “I thought Movember was a great balance of being able to do some good and also have a bit of fun with my friends at Acquia and in the Drupal community. 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, but the awareness of this issue is incredibly low. What better ways to draw attention to this matter and to raise funds for research then to do something fun and provocative like Movember? ” said Peter.
The idea for Movember was sparked in 2003 over a few beers in Melbourne, Australia. The Movember moustache has continued to grow year after year, expanding to the US, UK, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, Spain, South Africa, the Netherlands and Finland. In 2009, global participation of Mo Bros and Mo Sistas climbed to 255,755, with over one million donors raising $42 Million US equivalent dollars for Movember’s global beneficiary partners.
“I am overwhelmed with the level of participation from Acquia employees and ecstatic over the amount of money we have raised as a team, it is important to ensure every individual receives the necessary treatment they need to fight the many devastating diseases that effect them every day. We at Acquia are helping others to win the battle one moustache at a time.” said Tom Erickson, CEO, Acquia.

The Movember Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that runs the global men's health initiative, Movember. Each year, Movember, the month formerly known as November, is responsible for the sprouting of thousands of Mo's (Australian slang for moustache, where the movement began) on men’s faces around the world, raising vital awareness and funds for men’s health, specifically for cancer affecting men. Men who grow moustaches for the month of Movember, called Mo Bros, become walking, talking billboards for the cause, raising awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often-ignored issue of men’s health. Movember funds raised in the US benefit the Prostate Cancer Foundation (www.pcf.org) and LIVESTRONG (www.livestrong.org).
