"It is very important to me that Acquia has a marketing leader who understands the importance of growing and sustaining a community and who is passionate about the principles of open source software," said Acquia co-founder and CTO Dries Buytaert as Jeff Whatcott joined the company as vice president of marketing, responsible for all marketing activity. Whatcott recently arrived from Adobe, where he led marketing for LiveCycle and Flex.

I've heard from several different sources about a "hot deal" for venture capital funding of a Drupal-oriented start-up called Acquia. Acquia has been in stealth mode, but not for long -- "hot" means likely to get funded, perhaps by a consortium of VCs.

Drupal project founder Dries Buytaert has had a productive year, even by his standards. He wrapped up his PhD, became a father, started a company (Acquia) with Jay Batson, and, oh yeah, continued to steer the good ship Drupal towards modular, multi-user Web CMS heaven.

We caught up with the man just before Christmas, and collared him for a quick chat about Acquia, Drupal and OSS.

“When I examine the landscape of open source projects that have had a big impact on the technology industry, I’ve concluded that projects which have had the biggest impact (usually) have a well-capitalized company behind them.”

- Dries Buytaert, November 2007

According to CMSWatch, big piles of venture capital are being thrown at a Drupal-oriented startup called Acquia. Maybe you’re happy for Dries and company or maybe you don’t care.

But, as you might well have heard, there’s more to this story than meets the eye. Drupal founder Dries Buytaert (who owns the Drupal trademark) is one half of the team behind the startup, along with Jay Batson. The move will see PhD student (and new father - Congratulations!) Buytaert finally cashing in on his popular Web CMS invention.

Mashable!

Only a few days ago did Dries Buytaert, the Belgian developer behind Drupal, the open-source content management system, decide to launch a start-up to take parts of the effort commercial. Today, Acquia, the company formed to pusue that effort, has gathered together a $7 million first round investment. The round was led by North Bridge Venture Partners as well as Sigma Partners and O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures.

Buytaert put Acquia together to be “a company that is to Drupal what Ubuntu or RedHat are to Linux. If we want Drupal to grow by at least a factor of 10, keeping Drupal a hobby project as it is today, and taking a regular programming job at a big Belgian bank is clearly not going to cut it.”

What is the good news? Dries Buytaert, project leader for Drupal, is starting his first Drupal startup. The working name for the company is Acquia.

Does anyone else see the irony in Drupal's founder not beginning his first Drupal startup until seven years after releasing Drupal publicly? Think of all the developers, IT leaders, and companies that have prospered over the years from Drupal. In all that time, Dries has been very careful to not benefit more than others in the Drupal community. All in all, I think Dries has shown the highest respect for open source as well as loyalty to the Drupal community.

On The Market Value of a Brand

Sandro Groganz has an interesting post where he attempts to calculate the value of the MySQL brand as a component of the acquisition price Sun paid. Here's the punch line: "As of today, a whopping 85% of MySQL’s economic value added can be attributed to its strong Open Source brand." I haven't checked Sandro's math in detail, but it's clear that brand is a huge component of the value of MySQL."

Drupalcon Update

Drupalcon Boston 2008 preparations are reaching a fever pitch. Session slots are starting to fill, sponsors are signing up, registrations are streaming in. But we need more - lots more. So if you haven’t submitted your session, purchased your sponsorship, or paid your registration, stop reading now and get over the drupalcon.org and get it done.

CMSWire interview

I was interviewed by John Conroy of CMSWire. It turned out slightly more technical and visionary than previous interviews.
