Drupal Gardens Surpasses 40,000 Sites

Drupal Gardens passed a significant milestone yesterday, 40,000 sites created! This is an especially exciting moment for me as Acquia gets ready to exit the Drupal Gardens beta program tomorrow. Reaching 40,000 blew away my expectations for the number of beta sites, a testament to the market’s excitement of having the most powerful social publishing system available in a SaaS environment.

Introducing Acquia Dev Cloud

It has been only 18 months since we launched Acquia Hosting. Today, Acquia Hosting is serving 2.2 billion page views a month for several hundred customers and growing rapidly. In those 18 months, we also built a lot of tools to help organizations manage their entire Drupal workflow process from development to staging and production. The combined result is that we've built one of the world's best managed cloud environments for Drupal, and have proven that we can scale any Drupal site to meet the needs of the largest enterprises.

World leaders using Drupal

I'm happy to share another gigantic win for Drupal; the World Economic Forum (the Forum) has launched their internal collaboration platform on Drupal. The Forum is an independent international organization committed to improving the state of the world by engaging business, political, academic and other leaders. It is best known for its annual meeting in Davos. Their World Economic Leaders Community (WELCOM) is where they will engage online to address the most pressing business and global challenges.

Acquia’s Strategy: Drupal as the Standard Platform

Changing Way

Acquia is a for-profit company, based on the free/open source content management system Drupal. When Acquia was founded, a little over three years ago, I remarked on its similarity to Automattic (which is based on WordPress).

Today, Acquia and Drupal founder Dries Buytaert posted about “the vision that we’ve been working towards for the last 3 years, and… how Acquia can help simplify your web strategy.” That’s based on the premise that “you” are (or are a member of) an organization with multiple websites. Since the sites differ in many ways (scale, rate of change, etc.), you find yourself with a variety of platforms.

Drupal creator and project lead, Dries Buytaert, speaks passionately about the company he began as a hobby during his college days, with the business reach of Buytaert now extending into software company Acquia and Mollom.

Computerworld Australia caught up with Buytaert while he was in Australia for the first DrupalDownunder 2011 conference held last month in Brisbane, with the developer addressing claims that Drupal is a complex content management system (CMS) that becomes unmanageable once it is customised.

“At the end of the day, a content management system like Drupal is a complex tool," he said. "Building a complex website is not necessarily easy. It’s not a magical tool that will automatically build your website for you; it still needs some tweaking and some learning.”

A passion for PHP, as well as a strong developer community, has been vital to Drupal’s success, founder Dries Buytaert said.

Speaking to Computerworld Australia, Buytaert said Drupal’s growth can be partly attributed to the fact that the open source content management system (CMS) is written in PHP.

“I think one of the reasons Drupal grew and is one of the dominant systems on the Web is because it’s written in PHP,” he said. “The reason is that PHP is very accessible, it’s very easy for developers to open the code and make any changes.”

While Buytaert has no regrets writing Drupal in PHP, he said the company’s growth has resulted in an increased need for PHP developers.

Tesla Motors using Drupal

Tesla Moters is using Drupal for their website: http://www.teslamotors.com. Really beautiful design.

Tesla went public last year; it is the first American automaker to go public since Ford Motor's IPO more than 50 years ago.

Last month, Acquia employees (including myself) got to ride a Tesla Roadster Sport. It is a 100% electric sports car that boasts 288 horse power. The car goes from 0 to 60 mph (100 km/h) in 3.7 seconds. Not bad for a battery-powered car.

Impressive car, impressive company and impressive website. :)
