Acquia, Investors and Teaming Up to Build Greatness

In the summer of 2007, I received an email from Michael Skok of Northbridge Venture Partners, who I had known for 12 years at that time. I had recently exited Mercury Interactive after its acquisition by HP. He suggested that I meet with a entrepreneur around a project he was looking at. When I met with Jay Batson, and short thereafter with Dries Buytaert, I was intrigued. It was Michael's vision about the possibilities however that really grabbed my attention. The three asked me later that year to join the yet unnamed company as its founding CEO.

Cloud services provider Acquia has commissioned a Forrester report on open source WCM, and while the results are not overwhelming, it does show more enterprise companies are employing open source systems.

Nearly 60 percent of the 160 companies surveyed said they had at least considered open source for their WCM programs. The report also found that executives who make these kind of decisions are also the ones who are least likely to be very satisfied with their choice.

It's Still a Who's Who of WCM
I wish I could show you the magic quadrant diagram to give the picture in a quick snapshot, but I can't. Suffice it say the players are pretty much all the same — this is a who's who of web content management. What does this tell us? I think it tells us that the game is still the same and the established players have all the equipment necessary to play it.

Taking a quick look back at where vendors were on the WCM MQ list last year (in November to be exact), you can see that the leaders are solidified and it will take some bold moves to get into that quadrant. Interestingly, Ektron has been able to do it. Oops. Did I spoil the surprise?

Mark Newton shows how the open source content management system can make life easier for you and your clients
There are many different ways to build a website these days. When I first started in this business, you wrote HTML files directly onto a local web server and, if it all looked good, then uploaded these files to the live web server.

Later, the introduction of scripting languages made the need for such a staging server all the greater, because links between pages and menus were (and often still are) hand-coded, and so in danger of becoming broken.
