Semtechbiz LogoLast week’s SemTechBiz San Francisco was packed with insightful keynotes and sessions showing trends for semantic web technologies. The hot topics of the conference were Google’s, Yahoo’s and Wikidata’s Knowledge Graphs, as well as the adoption of schema.org, an initiative launched 2 years ago by the major search engines to standardize and promote structured data on the Web.

Migrate 2.6 - framework changes

The Migrate module provides services for migrating data from various sources (other CMS frameworks, external web services, or other Drupal installations) into the local Drupal environment. It has been used to migrate sites such as The Economist, Examiner.com, Stanford Law School, and PayPal and eBay's developer forums (x.com) to Drupal.

Migrate 2.6 is now in beta. Today I will cover some of the most significant changes at the framework level, for those who have been developing their data migrations using Migrate 2.5 and earlier. There have also been significant UI changes, and the introduction of a framework for implementing wizard-style UIs for defining migrations, which will be covered in future posts.

Open Source and Local Economies - Meet Ranko Marinic

Here is one more conversation I had at Drupal Camp Alpe-Adria in April, 2013. Ranko Marinic is from Croatia and has some great perspectives. He works as an IT consultant with a wide range of technologies and with Drupal "by night". He is studying economics and has become interested in the economic effects on local communities of implementing open source software. Ranko also talks about the moment he really started believing in open source as a social movement.

Event summary: DrupalJam 2013

Last Friday the annual one-day DrupalJam conference was held in the Rotterdam Feyenoord soccer stadium. The conference, which saw its eighth edition - if I recall correctly - is shifting to be more business focused with its new motto Drupal beyond the code, and was a great success with over a 100 participants. This blog post serves as a high-level summary of a couple of the talks that I attended.
