Advocating for Displaced Refugees

Background
UNRWA is a United Nations agency mandated to provide assistance and protection to a population of some 5 million registered Palestinian refugees. UNRWA, United Nations Relief and Works Agency has services that encompass education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, microfinance and emergency assistance.

To continuously grow and provide outstanding service to the refugees, UNRWA needed to structure, design and develop a new site on Drupal in order to serve as a vehicle for news and press releases, multimedia resources, and program information. The main goal of the site is to provide transparency and information to individuals around the world regarding UNRWA's work.

Process
Vardot initiated the project with UNRWA by assessing the problems, determining the solution and developing a plan to target the goals. The old site along with multiple resources was analyzed and restructured to architect a new site with prominent user-experience.

Vardot and UNRWA determined a framework in which the needs of each audience member type was met along with the needs of the UNRWA team. From the research, a new website layout and information architecture was built to clearly organize the agency's information to it's various targeted audiences. The new architecture was also tailored to attract individuals to donate to UNRWA and increase conversion rates. A full visual design was created in line with the agency's branding guidelines.

The development team built a fully scalable site on Drupal 7 with SEO enhancements to increase search indexing and visibility to search engines. The newly developed site was constructed to meet increased attraction and visitors to the site in times of emergency and overload of donations.

Drupal 7 gave the UNRWA team the ability to smoothly update the site's content and disseminate content on relevant pages. Vardot used the Drupal 7 internationalization to make system translations in order to provide an Arabic and English version of the site.

UNRWA continues to work with Vardot on a growth and support plan in order to keep their site up-to-date. Today, visitors to the site can easily access the most critical and relevant information they need while site admins have complete control over the content framework.
