The New Republic

Phase2 Technology Portfolio

The New Republic is one of the oldest and most esteemed magazines in the U.S. The opinions found in the magazine are highly valued by many policy experts, journalists and many others who demand in-depth critical analysis for current events. Unfortunately, the proprietary model of their old website inhibited their ability to keep pace with the changing demands of a modern audience.

What We Did

The New Republic chose to revamp its online distribution of content by implementing OpenPublish, developed by Phase2 Technology. OpenPublish is a packaged distribution of the popular open source social publishing platform, Drupal, that has been tailored to meet the needs of online news publishers. It is a non-proprietary model that is current, modular, and extensible. Therefore, the TNR website now allows for flexible and creative layout options as well as adaptability to new content types.

OpenPublish harnesses the power of Semantic Web, which allows search engines to more effectively and accurately locate TNR's content. The intuitive back-end administration is easy to manage with little technical training which makes online publishing less resource intensive.

The website was topped off with a modern design that stayed true to long-held traditions at TNR. The design won several awards within the journalism and web design communities.
