There’s no question that Drupal is one of the hottest web technologies out there. And a career in Drupal can offer a profitable and interesting career path, as well as opportunity to engage in the world’s largest and most active open source community. Drupal powers millions of websites, and with this explosion comes an ever growing need to hire people to build and maintain these sites. The challenge the community is facing is one of supply and demand. Simply put, there just aren’t enough... Meer

Open source Drupal and government in the UK - 2014

Impressions and Acquia's presentation from the 2014 Government ICT 2.0 conference in London. Practically a road show ... Open source Drupal is doing well in public service. It is empowering government agencies, NGOs, and educational institutions to make a positive difference in the world. Riding this wave, I am thrilled to have the chance to speak at four (sort of 5) government-related conferences in 2014: The Australian Government CTO, John Sheridan, and I were the keynote speakers at DrupalGov in Canberra; I gave an Acquia presentation... Become Acquia Back end Specialist Certified!

Back in July we gathered several members of our customer success team to create a new Drupal backend developer certification exam in our Reading, UK office. This group comprised of a unique mix of people working on large scale Drupal implementations. They are not used used to teaching, architecting and developing in Drupal but also have large exposure troubleshooting problems produced by bad configurations or poorly developed code. We wanted to cover different areas of expertise that are typically needed for a skilled backend developer in order to develop custom modules, integrations with... Meer

One of the greatest perks about working at Acquia is that we support a broad spectrum of customers, large and small, technology and service, domestic and international. You Have 24 Hours - Gamify Awareness Like the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

If you’ve been on any social platform within the last few months, I’m sure you’ve seen a friend, family member or any number of celebrities make videos of themselves dumping a bucket of ice water on their heads, and then challenging a others to do the same. Oh, and each challenge carries a time limit of 24 hours. The list has evolved to feature the likes of Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and Tesla’s Elon Musk, and it’s picking up steam through the rest of the celebrity... Meer

Drupal Stories Kick Off: My Own Drupal Story

It’s no secret that Drupalists are in high demand. I’ve blogged about the need for training more Drupalers and getting to them earlier in their careers previously, but that’s just one aspect of the greater topic which merits a closer inspection as a cohesive whole. Drupal is an open source content management framework with a rabidly helpful community of developers, many of whom have been involved in creating some of the most notable properties on the web. It’s not surprising that good Drupal developers are a highly sought... Meer

New Commons Media Integration

Drupal is known for providing a broad range of functionality with its extensible core and the tens of thousands of free contributed modules which add or extend functionality. One challenge for people who are building applications on top of Drupal is taking advantage of this flexibility and broad range of available functionality without compromising the usability of their applications for end users, and even for themselves as site maintainers. This pattern holds true around media integration for Drupal. Drupal’s Media module powers over... Meer

Commons Team Improving Contrib & Core

As part of our day-to-day maintenance of Drupal Commons, we often assist with Drupal contributed modules that are included as part of Commons but not specific to the application, whether that means fixing bugs by writing or reviewing patches, or coordinating with other module maintainers and the Drupal Security team to help reduce the time between reported issues and security advisories. Below is a partial list of popular Drupal modules that are... Meer

Why Drupal Was Chosen to Build a Platform for Global Problem Solving

Saïd Business School’s GOTO website is the online platform of the Global Opportunities and Threats: Oxford (GOTO) community, an action-oriented problem-solving community tackling the issues the world is facing today. Pronovix became a finalist in Acquia's inaugural Partner Site of the Year Award Program for its work on the SBS GOTO site in the External Community Site category. The Global Opportunities and Threats: Oxford (GOTO) community connects students, alumni and the faculty from across the University of Oxford and their research via this online platform to discuss, debate, and drive new... Run a Hackathon, inspire passion for Drupal

With a beta release of Drupal 8 just around the corner, and a library of modules that need a stable port (or at least a beta release) on release day, now is the time to get your learning underway and dive in. A brief look at this chart from the Drupal 7 development cycle makes the effect of available contrib on core uptake really clear. If we as a community can ensure contrib is ready when Drupal 8 is released, then everyone has a greater incentive to jump in! One of my favourite ways of learning and rapidly spreading ideas to many is to run a Hackathon. The amazing thing about Hackathons... Meer

Conference Organizing Distribution (COD) 7 Beta2

COD Beta 2 Over the Holiday weekend, over 25 tickets were solved coming out of the Alpha6 and Beta1 release of COD. Late Monday night, COD Beta2 was released! This release includes fixes to the session submission system, specifically where time-slots and tracks weren't being properly saved in some conditions. We also made changes to the administration menu paths to de-couple them from the node and be less confusing. You can see the full release notes here: https://www.drupal.org/node/2299327... Meer

Closing the Drupal Education Gap

Demand for Drupal talent is high… Really high. A good Drupaler can find work on some of the most notable sites in the world next to other great minds and in good working conditions. Drupal is taking the world by storm, converting government agencies, Fortune 500s and many more on a daily basis. But this popularity has come at a price. The existing talent pool is just too limited to support Drupal’s popularity without serious investment in developing a greater pool of talent, and that something the existing community has got to own and make happen. Here at Acquia, we’ve worked toward this goal... Meer

Leverage Drush 7 for Drupal 8

Whether you’re backing up your code, files and database, setting up a cron job or auditing and troubleshooting a site, Drush always comes to the rescue. With Drupal 8 around the corner, it’s time to explore how Drush 7 can once again be a drupalist’s best... Meer

Search API Drupal 8 Sprint June 2014

During 13th of June until the 15th of June we had a very successful Search API D8 sprint as announced at http://drupalsear.ch/node/681 and at Intracto's site. DrupalGov Canberra 2014 and the push for Drupal in Australian Government

There was some exciting news announced last week as the Australian government said it was strongly considering replatforming on Drupal, potentially replacing 1200 websites used across the board of the commonwealth. The reasons for the move are accredited to lower costs, better responsive capabilities, security and accessibility compliance and the ability to leverage a massive, innovative open source ecosystem. In a blog post, CTO John Sheridan said, “The... Meer

Lonestar PHP 2014

I had the privilege of attending Lonestar PHP 2014 in Addison, Texas a couple weekends ago. It was an amazing event full of amazing people and valuable sessions. For those of you who know me, I typically spend a lot of time in the hallways just talking with and meeting new people, however I did attempt to attend some sessions and the calibre of sessions being presented was ridiculously high. The PHP community that attends these events is really obviously close knit. It was a bit like going to a large regional Drupal event. People obviously knew each other, and had old conversations to pick up... Meer

I’m Kris Vanderwater, Drupal Developer and Acquia’s Developer Evangelist.

I’ve been working at Acquia for a little over two weeks now. The experience has been one I would characterize as “whirlwind” in nature. If you ask new Acquians about their on-boarding experience, the most common comparison is the age old “Drinking from a firehose” analogy. I honestly expected, as someone who already knew Drupal, that this might in some way lessen the stream of information to manageable levels. I was wrong. If anything the fire hose is a bit like sticking your toes into the shallow end of the pool, and knowing Drupal already was like “Oh you know how to swim? Here’s the ocean... Meer

San Francisco State University moves to Drupal

What is a website? For colleges and universities everywhere, a website is an opportunity to tell a story. Thanks to this opportunity, schools depend on websites more than ever to deliver rich, engaging experiences. When looking for a CMS capable of delivering this experience, schools naturally look at Drupal. Today, about 30 percent of colleges and universities in the United States use Drupal to power their main .edu site. It helps that Drupal has the flexibility to be used for any site a campus needs -- recruiting, admissions, development, general outreach and much more. In fact, at Acquia... Meer

Do well and do good

This blog post is on purpose, Open Source, profit and pie. This week I had an opportunity to meet Professor Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum. I was inspired by the following comment he made (not his exact words): "Because companies strive to have a positive balance sheet, they take more in, than they give out. However, as individuals, we define success as giving more than you take. Given that many of us are leaders as... Meer

In the Era of the Small Screen, Localization is More Important Than Ever

If you plan on competing in the global marketplace—and chances are, you eventually will—you have to make sure that every customer in every country has the opportunity to engage with your brand. After you mark off the logistical action items for globalizing your website, such as accommodating different time zones and currencies, you’re faced with a bigger question: How will we get users in this country to engage? How you answer that question depends on which country you’re talking about. The colors, wording and calls to action that make Chinese users engage aren’t the same ones that Brazilians... Meer
