Four Reasons I'm Excited About Attending (my first!) SXSW 2014

Next week I'm attending my first ever South by Southwest in Austin. I'm pretty sure SXSW is the first conference I've ever *attended.* I've worked many conferences either as an exhibitor or speaker, but I've never experienced a conference as an attendee. I'll bring my comfy shoes, plenty of charging devices + cables, lots of business cards, and as much energy as possible to stay out past my usual bedtime of 10pm! Here's what I'm most looking forward to: Hearing from the Hacker and the Hustler I'm really looking forward to watching my colleagues Tom Erickson and ... Meer

You’re Already In The Content Game

Whether the size of your content team is 50 people or zero, you’re already in the content game. If you’re not publishing content, the chances are good that your customers are creating it on your behalf. The Content Around Us Apple has no social media presence to speak of. As of this writing, however, there were 173,411 photos on Instagram tagged #applestore and 6,859 tagged #geniusbar. (For the record, there were also six tagged #geniusbarmyass.) While it can be great to have ardent fans of your brand posting flattering content about your brand, that isn’t always what happens. Trader Joe’s... Meer

Using Drupal to Support Web Accessibility in Higher Education

Web accessibility in higher education is not a new topic. For over 15 years most institutions have been working to insure that their web accessibility adheres to the standards and protocols set forth in Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1998 (even though 508, as written, does not automatically apply to institutions of higher education, even those that receive federal funding). And certainly before the benchmark of 508 came around colleges and universities have been leaders in making sure that technology usage around campus supported the diverse needs of the entire community. In fact... Meer

3 Keys to Taking Your E-Commerce Site Global

Cloud-based platforms and services have made going global more of a plug-and-play proposition than ever before. You can plug specialized modules into your workflow that let you translate content, run analytics, edit across websites and more, without leaving your CMS. The remaining challenges are more strategic in nature. Here are three things that you should know before diving in: 1. The world doesn’t revolve around the English language To maximize your website or online business, you need to offer at least two language options to visitors to your site. The global population is not made up of... Meer

Best practices for creating and driving social commerce experiences

As the increasingly social nature of the internet continues to alter the world of commerce, the most recent changes have seen the consumer take a more active role—a partnership role—in producing and consuming a brand’s content or services. My most recent blog looked at how social commerce has defined the purchase process into three phases. In this blog, I’ll look at how social commerce is impacting the creation and consumption of products and services. In the past, user testing held a prominent place in many brands’... Meer

All Commerce is Social: The 3 Phases of Purchase

Way back in 1999 -- a thousand years ago in internet years -- writer and designer named Darcy DiNucci coined the phrase Web 2.0. This marked the beginning of the web as a social experience, eventually altering commerce so that today customers can be brand advocates who play a crucial role in building your business. You already know that your customers are talking about your brand on social media platforms, posting images from your product pages to Pinterest, and checking reviews. The brick-and-mortar and virtual commerce experiences have become so intertwined that customers sometimes even... Meer

Mobile is Changing the Game for Sephora

SAN FRANCISCO- While you may be familiar with Sephora as the cosmetic store at the local mall, the beauty chain is very comfortable in the virtual marketplace as well, concentrating on social and mobile platforms. I had the chance to catch up with Danny Sullivan, vice president of mobile for Sephora, while attending Day 2 of Apps World North America. I asked Sullivan to talk about how Sephora is approaching mobile and utilizing responsive design. Sullivan took part in an Apps World panel that examined how mobile devices and tablets are changing the consumer experience and how new technologies... Meer

Acquia Rated Positive in Gartner MarketScope for User Experience Platforms

Late last week, Acquia was rated Positive by Gartner in their new MarketScope for User Experience Platforms. What are User Experience Platforms (UXP) you ask? Here's what Gartner says: Traditional approaches to architecting, developing and managing websites, portal sites and mobile apps use a variety of disconnected and duplicative tools... A UXP is an integrated set of tools for delivering modern websites and portals. It focuses on the front end, the presentation and user interaction layer. When Gartner kicked off their... Meer

Selecting a New CMS? Don't Skip the Proof of Concept

Would you buy a house, based only on its curb appeal? Would you buy a car without test driving it? Would you even buy a pair of new jeans without trying them on first? (Ok, I've done this. And it goes badly every time). In all three cases, I hope the answer is no. When making major decisions like buying a new house or car, we invest a considerable amount of time and effort into making sure we make the right choice.  So why are companies selecting a new CMS without test driving the product? Selecting the Vendor with the Best Demo The process for selecting a new CMS often seems to be: 1)... Meer

Stakeholder Visibility Will Ensure Government IT Success

The recent BBC interview with Bill Crothers about IT suppliers in the public sector was depressingly familiar. In particular, the remark from Sir Francis Maude1 about the government department that was charged £30,000 for changing the text on a web page sent a shudder down my spine. Just to put this into context for a moment, £30,000 is almost three times what someone working for 37 hours a week on minimum wage would earn. These are ludicrous sums of money for what should be very simple processes. The sad fact is that IT suppliers often charge unreasonable amounts to deliver (sometimes... Meer

Setting the Record Straight on the Total Cost of Adobe AEM vs Acquia

As Acquia begins to compete more often with Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) in enterprise web content management selections, I'm coming across a set of common objections coming from prospects after they speak with Adobe. We’ve been told by multiple customers that Adobe had an “unbiased partner” create a total-cost-of-ownership (TCO) document to compare Adobe AEM vs. Acquia. The TCO document claims a typical Drupal project costs nearly 70% more than Adobe AEM, with example 3 years costs of approximately $2.4m for Adobe AEM and $4m for Drupal. I’ve read the document, and the total cost of... Meer

Meeting Marketing Challenges with Automation and Drupal

Often marketing's biggest challenges are long sales cycles, complex decision-making processes, and multiple stakeholders. There is increasing pressure on marketing professionals to find the most qualified prospects and build relationships with them before the lead is passed to sales. What Is Marketing Automation? Marketing automation allows organizations to consolidate, streamline, and better manage campaigns that were once cumbersome to track and administer. Once implemented, the system enables a chief marketing officer to view a centralized dashboard to measure the ROI of various... Meer

In this interview, Alex talks about the future of FaveCast and... Meer

Global Companies Can’t Afford Not to Integrate Their Content Workflow

There’s a new truth when it comes to content: Integrate or drown. As more companies go global, social and mobile, the amount of web content they must deal with multiplies exponentially. In order to stay productive (and sane), marketers and others who deal with content must streamline their workflow. Given the volume of both consumer and business apps used in the enterprise today, the only way to streamline is to integrate. Streamlined workflows don’t happen naturally. In fact, the world seems to conspire against them. From social media channels to mobile apps, cloud storage to CRM, every new... Meer

Big Data and the Soles of Your Shoes There has been significant ink killed in the name of Big Data over the last few years. Much of that slaughter is justified; Big Data represents a massive generational shift in the way we think about data and its impact on every aspect of our personal and professional lives. But I don’t think people really get it. Big Data is too big and too abstract for most... Meer

When do we Reach the Tipping Point?

Malcolm Gladwell’s 2000 best seller The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference describes how certain “ideas and products and messages and behaviors spread like viruses” throughout our society and how they take hold and transform the world around us. These phenomena happen without much forewarning and can be difficult to see as they’re taking place and even difficult to comprehend when trying to understand them in retrospect. Why, for example, did Hush Puppy go from selling only 30,000 pairs of shoes in the early 1990’s, after a steady decades-long decrease, to nearly 2... Meer
