Acquia: $45M in 2012 revenue, staff now above 300 [May 22, 2013]

Burlington-based Web publishing software firm Acquia said Wednesday it received $45.3 million in revenue in 2012, more than doubling its top line from the previous year.

Acquia also said it has doubled its employee count in the past 15 months, and now has about 340 employees globally, with half of them in Burlington.

That's up from the 260 employees Acquia had in late November, when the firm raised $30 million in funding.

The company provides tools and support for enterprises using the open-source Drupal Web publishing platform. Drupal has surged in popularity among enterprises in recent years due to the potential for cost savings and the flexibility of design.
Acquia previously reported receiving $21.8 million in revenue in 2011. Those revenue results had made Acquia the fastest-growing software company on the 2012 Inc. 500 list, and the eighth fastest-growing company on the list overall.

The firm says it now has more than 3,800 customers, up from about 2,000 at the end of 2011. New customers include Georgetown University, Olympus Corporation of the Americas and Polycom.

Acquia is "enabling our customers to build disruptive digital businesses in an open source way," co-founder and CTO Dries Buytaert said in a news release announcing the revenue growth Wednesday.

Key customer sectors include media and entertainment (NBC, Warner Music Group), high-tech (eBay, Twitter), health care (Humana) and higher-education (Stanford University).

Cette offre conjugue certes un hébergement de Drupal sur des datacenters français, mais donne également accès à l’offre Acquia Cloud, qui apporte un environnement expert autour de Drupal, doué notamment d’un environnement de développement, d’un accès aux API d’Acquia Cloud, et d’outils d’optimisation des déploiements, comme l’indique le site d’Acquia. Un workflow automatisé ainsi qu’un système de stacking adapté à Drupal sont également intégrés, souligne Alter Way dans un communiqué. A cela s’ajoute un accès aux experts de chez Acquia.

Alter Way, qui était déjà partenaire d’Acquia autour de l’intégration Drupal, servira ainsi de relai pour lancer cette offre Cloud en France, «pays-pilote» avant un déploiement de l’offre à l’international.

Alter Way propose des services d’hébergement de sites Web et dispose également d’une offre cloud baptisée H2O, à base de solutions Open Source.

Massive disruption is occurring as marketing goes digital. Business is moving steadily towards providing a fully personalized and truly integrated digital experience—building upon recent advances in user experience, analytics, cloud computing and storage, and an omni-channel experience across mobile platforms and social media.

Yet while the end user digital journey has improved significantly, we are only in the earliest stages of offering a compelling, integrated digital experience. The biggest impediment? The accelerating rate of change around mobile, web, and social experiences. Existing technologies struggle to keep pace, while new technologies fail to offer either the breadth or depth of the capabilities required. Traditional paradigms in software development are failing to keep up.

The degree of personalization needed for the next generation digital experience requires managing a lot of data. Superdata. As the degree of personalization and anticipation of the online visitor’s needs increases, computing power also must increase. This is where open source is taking the lead. The vision for this next generation digital experience has been emerging over the past few years. Forrester started out calling it Web Experience Management.

More recently, as "web" began to sound a bit less cutting edge, they’ve begun to call it Digital Customer Experience, or Digital Experience (DX). Others call it Digital Experience Management, or DXM.

The good news is that many of the technologies that will allow us to accomplish this goal have arrived on the scene and are now being put to the task. What is also clear is that open source is the foundation on which this next generation digital experience is being built. Big Data is the term given to the idea of gathering, storing, and mining all of the information required to achieve a desired result. Personalization is the process of applying this information to the individual.

Released today during the Music Biz 2013 event, a new infographic from digitalmusic.org, the home of music business association NARM’s digital initiatives, is giving bands, record labels, physical and digital music retail outlets, and other music companies a crash course in search engine optimization (SEO). This week, I received an email from some marketing folks that Acquia was announcing they are open sourcing their mobile application code for posting content to Drupal sites. For those that don't know, Acquia is a commercial open source software company that provides products, services, and technical support for Drupal. This isn't the first time Acquia and other Drupal vendors have given code back to the Drupal community and you can be assured it won't be the last.

Honestly, I had not been following the development of Drupal Create so it's taken me some time to better understand the significance of this story to open source. SparkPR's Eric Sokolsky explained it to me in his email this way:

Today, Acquia released source code that will allow Drupal website content owners and developers to create their own customized mobile content publishing apps. These apps – the first of their kind on the Drupal platform -- will enable developers to create or curate content on their iOS phones and publish it directly to their existing Drupal-based sites – without being tethered to a laptop or desktop computer.

If I didn't know any better, I would have thought Acquia was eavesdropping on some recent discussions I've had regarding my observation on the potential conflicts between open source vendors and open source communities. Their action alone suggests that perhaps I worry too much. Let me explain.

What has to be one of the most difficult things for website owners to do is to create content from a mobile device — any content producer will vouch for this painful reality. But while laptops and desktops provide ease of use, they are not exactly practical to use when publishing content on the go.

Some work related items have to be done remotely as is seen in the many discussions on the bring your own device phenomenon. Quite often, however, this is in the context of document collaboration, social media and other collaborative work settings and rarely about content production. In this case it's widely accepted that mobile devices are really not preferable at all.

The chief digital officer, a relatively recent addition to the C-Suite, is already making his influence felt on today’s technological landscape and, by extension, everyday living. Companies that have yet to hire a CDO, but who regard a great digital customer experience as core to the business, should consider making room for one.

From morning coffee (Starbucks Corp. has a chief digital officer) to the evening panel discussion at the local university (Harvard University has one as well), there’s now a CDO considering the digital implications of experiences that you might not expect. Going through Times Square, I’m reminded that NYC now has its own chief digital officer, that there’s a CDO at the nearby CVS Caremark Corp., and a CDO at the New York Stock Exchange.

It’s fairly easy to pinpoint the trickle-down difference at this everyday level, compared to the days prior the appearance of the chief digital officer. Whether you’re Whole Foods Market Inc. or Warner Music, you now likely have somebody — even if he or she doesn’t have a CDO title — with full responsibility for how technology frames the customer experience. It’s at this personal interaction level where the CDO’s impact is most keenly felt.

Government web consolidation opens opportunities to Drupal community [March 11, 2013]

There are currently more than 1,500 Government of Canada-owned URLS, according to an e-mailed statement from Matthew Conway, a spokesperson for Treasury Board president Tony Clement.

Officials want to reduce that to six or fewer websites as part of a broader modernization effort aimed at making it easier for citizens to digitally navigate their way through federal services.

At the same time, Mr. Conway said the government intends to consolidate and standardize the many platforms and tools used to support the federal government’s vast web presence.

CGI Federal Inc. has won a $3.5 million contract to move the Federal Trade Commission’s public websites to the cloud

The contract was awarded under the GSA contract Infrastructure as a Service blanket purchase agreement and is one of several cloud-related contracts CGI has won in recent months.

CGI said that its teammates on this contract are Akamai and Acquia.

“We look forward to establishing a new partnership with the FTC,” said Toni Townes-Whitley, CGI’s senior vice president for civilian agency programs. “CGI’s cloud solutions, including web hosting, document management and data center consolidation, are used by a range of federal agencies from the Department of Homeland Security to Environmental Protection Agency.”

Between May and July, life was good for companies developing social-media tools for marketers. Acquisitions during that time valued three companies in the industry at more than $1 billion combined.

First, Oracle acquired Vitrue in a deal valued at $300 million, according to TechCrunch. The in June, Salesforce.com said it was buying Buddy Media for $689 million. The next month, Google acquired Wildfire for about $250 million plus performance incentives.

The frenzy appears to be over, but Wendell Lansford, the chief executive officer of Offerpop, is prepping the company he co-founded to be the top contender in the industry’s next round. But will any more big spenders come knocking again?
