Lessons from DrupalCon: Come for the Product, Stay for the Community

It’s been a couple of weeks since I came back from my first DrupalCon. It was a whirlwind event full of sessions, customer meetings, and yes – a few parties. There were over 3,300 attendees at DrupalCon, and we had over 700 of them at our Acquia Customer Love party. It truly was an awesome event, and I met lots of great people. Most of them Drupal developers.

Dries Buytaert presents his State of Drupal keynote, revealing the current state of Drupal 8 between Feature Freeze and Code Freeze, also giving a glimpse of what's beyond Drupal 8 after we have a successful release.

"It's not just about managing content, it's about managing complete digital experiences," Buytaert said. "We as Drupal can help bring these tools to the masses, that we can help do this in an open way, in a flexible way and in an affordable way."

Event features keynote by Drupal founder, Dries Buytaert; substantial content focused on upcoming Drupal 8 release.

The Drupal Association, the nonprofit organization dedicated to helping the Drupal open source CMS project flourish, today announced that DrupalCon Portland 2013 has set a new record for attendance. The event opens today with more than 3,300 attendees, including a mix of individual developers, designers, IT managers, agencies and Fortune 100 companies. The event takes place at the Oregon Convention Center.

“The amazing global community that powers Drupal continues to grow in energy and numbers,” said Holly Ross, Executive Director of the Drupal Association, which produces and hosts annual DrupalCon events around the world. “DrupalCon is where the community comes together to share and grow technical and design skills, network with friends, exchange best practices and drive the Drupal project forward.”

As always, DrupalCon kicks off with Drupal founder, Dries Buytaert’s keynote address followed by three days of keynotes, technical sessions, training and networking events. Speakers include renowned user experience expert Karen McGrane and Silicon Valley author and engineering leader Michael Lopp.

Today was the official start of my first DrupalCon. As a newbie, it was a fun experience to see 3,300 Drupalists all in one room, anxious to hear from Dries, the original developer of Drupal.
