Why did we redesign the blog on Acquia.com?
by Katelyn Fogarty
As the business grows your site should grow with you. We recently redesigned the homepage of acquia.com and now it was time to update our blog section. Our old design had a featured blog section that highlighted 3 blog posts. Sometimes the same post showed in 2 of the 3 spots and this featured section showed on every page of the blog. It was hard to find anything other than the featured articles. We decided with the new blog we would keep the 3 featured spots but make sure you only see these spots on the homepage of the blog and adjust the sizes a little bit.
Main blog page
On the old version of our blog we have 3 categories of blogs, business, technology and design. We like these categories but we needed to display them in a more useful way and without limiting the view of all other blog posts. We decided to make those categories as individual tags and allow our users to filter on them. If you click the tag that says technology now you will go to a landing page with all blogs tagged with technology. We also called these categories out in the right sidebar as well. The other big change we made with the homepage is changing out author icons for blog images. We are encouraging our users to add images to their blog posts and these images are getting posted inline on our blog listing page. This really makes the page more eye catching and makes me want to click on a few more posts!
Individual blog pages
The goal on these pages is to highlight the article and feature the author. We created an author block in the right sidebar that gives a few fun facts about the author along with links to their personal social networks so they are featured as the author.
We also added a custom tweet this section. If you click the standard tweet button on the page it will just tweet the title of the blog post. This new tweet box allows the author to put in a custom message and use hash tags if they wanted to so the tweet is more engaging to users on twitter.
Blog Series Pages
We are introducing blog series pages! We started a few months ago posting blogs that relate to each other on specific tops such as Big Data and Mobile. We wanted a place to keep these together and add in custom calls to actions that related to those types of stories. We also allow for guest bloggers in this section and we will feature them like we do our internal bloggers.
Our next phase of our blog is to add in a bit more monetization to the individual blog pages. This way if a blog is related to a white paper we have we can attach it to the bottom of the page to try and engage our readers. We are going to watch the traffic and engagement closely and continue to iterate as we go. I hope you like the new blog design!
