Oracle's Love/Hate Relationship with Open Source
by Tom Wentworth
Matt Asay, a long time open source evangelist with over a decade of experience at companies like MongoDB, Canonical, and Alfresco, posted a great article in response to a new white paper on Open Source published by Oracle. (By the way, do people still read whitepapers?)
Oracle wrote this whitepaper for the US Department of Defense, and tries to make the case that open source costs more, and is less reliable than, proprietary software. While simultaneously pointing out that Oracle actively contributes to open source, so, you know, you should trust them.
Vendor whitepapers like this from Oracle are usually created in response to a growing threat from a competitor, and certainly open source is a big threat to Oracle's legacy business model. By the way, the DOD and many government agencies are flocking to Drupal.
Not much else to add beyond Matt's excellent response.
