What do funk musician George Clinton and communications giant Clear Channel have in common? Well, for one thing, me. I’ve worked for both, and while the experiences were very different, the work gave me good insight into what it takes to be successful in the world of media and entertainment.
Before coming to Acquia as director of media, entertainment and publishing, I spent several years in content production, developing broadcast programming for Clear Channel, CNET, and The Wall Street Journal. I’ve spent time in my career as a musician and digital marketer for George Clinton, and I also managed media and entertainment industry partnerships at the technology giant Cisco and a few music start-ups.
There’s terrific opportunity in my new role. To build deeper connections with fans, performing artists need to offer a great digital experience, one that incorporates social interaction, insider access to news and updates, and lots of multimedia. The people at Acquia are passionate about helping brands have all the tools the need to deliver great digital experiences. In the past, proprietary vendor systems I’ve used made this difficult. One of the reasons I joined Acquia was because I understood that with this company, I would no longer face the challenge of providing solutions to the media and entertainment organizations that were too rigid for the needs of the industry.
Today we launched Acquia Cloud Site Factory, and it’s a great fit for the media and entertainment industry. Acquia Cloud Site Factory is built on the open source web content management system Drupal. Acquia Cloud Site Factory has been used both by Warner Music and by Universal Music Group’s Interscope division, whose initial launch of more than two-dozen sites included Lauren Alaina, Nelly Furtado, Candice Glover, and Timbaland. Because music labels often represent hundreds of artists and are constantly adding new ones to their rosters, they need to continually launch new sites. All of them must have the functionality fans expect, and these sites must be able to handle large, unpredictable spikes in traffic when an artist has a popular new release or a video goes viral. And, of course, the music industry is just one example.
Acquia Cloud Site Factory has the capability of spinning up hundreds of new sites that can be based on the same underlying template, but look unique. New features can be added using any of the thousands of modules that have been created by the members of Drupal’s global development community.
Over the next few months, I’ll be examining the best practices that media, entertainment and publishing companies use to provide compelling digital experiences to their audiences using Acquia Cloud Site Factory. Whether it’s a record label, a cable network, a film studio, or digital entertainment company using Acquia Cloud Site Factory, we’ll share with you the features they’ve implemented and how they are used to grow, engage, and monetize their audiences.
