How do you pronounce "Acquia"?

Hear people on the streets of Boston pronounce "Acquia", with Dries telling the story of how our name came to be, in this great video. To create it, social media maven Evan Duffy and interns EB Pruett and Livy Holmes went into downtown Boston with a Flip cam for the day. Then AFD Creative (which also created our intro animation) edited it down to the masterpiece you see now. Really, we don't care how you say it -- just that you call us for Drupal answers, tools, and... Mehr

Changing how we share information - 140 characters at a time

Social networking has changed the way we communicate, connect, and learn. It allows us to keep in touch with people with a level of regularity and intimacy that we would not have been able to, because time and space make it impossible. Allowing individuals to gather and express themselves in a much more simple and immediate fashion, social media provides the capability to not only have the ability to share ideas and opinions, but also (if they wish) gain notoriety, and expand their influence. Twitter made an announcement on its... Mehr

Google Plus & Drupal = Done.

I love Google+. I know some people are underwhelmed from all the hype. But I like it. It may or may not be for the fact I have some abnormal dislike of Facebook (which I do). But I just think it's better. Easier to manage “circles” of all my different friends, family, co-workers, and strangers I meet in the street; easier to share photos (I already used Picasa); and just easier all around. It's the better way to social networking! Regardless of my opinion, here’s the... Mehr

An island or an archipelago?

Is your social business software a point solution or an enterprise solution? An island or an archipelago? Is your community a bottle opener or a Swiss Army knife, a Kindle or an iPad? I think you get the message here. A one trick pony point solution is great at solving a short term need but will not meet your future UNKNOWN business requirements. If you are looking to future proof your investment in a community platform then its wise to consider the bigger picture now rather than later. Okay that’s kind of obvious and you’ve probably heard that pitch before, right? If its so obvious then why... Mehr

Status Streams in Commons

At Enterprise 2.0 this week, Acquia demoed new status stream functionality that will be in the next version of Commons. The ability for users to post short updates to groups and users encourages new users to jump in and participate, provides a centralized space for ambient communication that doesn't need to crowd your inbox, and keeps users connected and engaged. It also represents a new frontier: where businesses previously had to choose between traditionally laborious... Mehr

Drupal Commons is now Commons

Acquia’s social business software distribution, Drupal Commons has allowed many developers to build community sites easily with Drupal. This has always been one of the major goals of Drupal Commons – to help Drupal adoption by making it easy for people to create great community sites quickly without having to build from scratch. Drupal Commons has been very successful in doing this – so much so we are ready to take the next step. We are changing Drupal Commons to... Mehr

Stop Thinking Open Source Can’t Be Full Service

STILL there is confusion out there around open source solutions. I was reading today’s great post by Caroline Dangson from the Dachis Group on “Building a Business Case for Customer Community," when one line derailed my concentration on the topic enough to make me write this. Caroline was outlining a great plan for building a detailed business case for customer communities, when I read this line in step 10: “Will... Mehr

A writer joins Acquia

Today marks my first day as Acquia's Director of Content and Communications, although I've been following the company since its birth. I started using Drupal in late 2007 -- right around when Jay and Dries were founding the company -- to build a site that would promote a book that was soon to be published. That site launched within a month of Acquia's first hires, and the popularity of Drupal supported me to write several video courses for lynda.com,... Mehr

What differentiates social business software platforms?

Frequently I hear people say the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Social Software is ‘overcrowded’ and very little separates the vendors from each other. One reason is because the core capabilities of social business software, namely blogs, discussions, social networking, file sharing, etc. are becoming ‘commoditized’ (sorry Tony, I used B.S. word #4). They exist in all... Mehr

Mr. Men and the Google Doodle

Guest blog post by Nancy Stango, CEO & Solution Architect, Blink Reaction. Mr. Tickle, Little Miss Sunshine, and Little Miss Naughty... do these names sound familiar? Even if not, you'd probably recognize Mr. Tickle's spaghetti-like arms and Little Miss Sunshine's big smile on her yellow body. These are the designs of Roger Hargreaves, whose 76th birthday was recently celebrated by "Google Doodles" of his lovable characters on google.com. In a global multi-doodle... Mehr

Drupal Commons: Then and Now

Drupal Commons 1.0 was released almost a year ago, in early August. I was an intern at Mediacurrent at the time, and as the author of several social networking modules, I was intrigued. I dug in and wrote an analysis of where Commons stood relative to its competitors, to the default Drupal installation profile, and to the... Mehr

Acquia Partners with ONUVA to Further Drupal's Success into Latin America

The explosion of Drupal has begun to shake the globe’s South Western Hemisphere. Over the past few months we’ve seen a significant uptick of demand for Drupal services across Central and South America. Being able to supply this demand with the same level of services Acquia offers our current customer base is of the utmost importance. Acquia has a handful of South American partners to help deliver these services including SeeD Software from Colubmia, BeezNest from Peru, and... Mehr

Drupal Commons brightens up with new themes and UX changes in release 1.6

This morning is an exciting moment: Drupal Commons version 1.6 is released! This release brings some really exciting new advancements: Two new themes. (Yay!) Usability improvements A collection of smaller, yet important feature advances Let me start off talking about the two new themes. Having these two themes, and bundling them into the default distribution, is HUGE. A key advantage of Drupal Commons is that it is built on Drupal - a platform that enables organizations to fully reflect their brand on their community site. But this was an abstract idea to most people who were kicking the... Mehr

Pre-Sales Consulting Mission: Always Do Right by the Customer

Someone once told me that 70% of all technology projects fail. Regardless of whether the statistic is true, it stuck to me like glue. As an engineer I always asked myself what I could have done differently to have made a project more successful, although it seemed the failures had much more effort put into them than the successes. When I joined Acquia as a consultant, I was surprised to see that many organizations were also experiencing the same anomaly. There are many factors that contribute to the failure of a project, but a common... Mehr

Acquia Network Partners Accelerate the Value of Owning Drupal Websites – New Relic Announces Real User Monitoring

Acquia partnerships with service providers such as New Relic, accelerate the value of owning a Drupal website. In early 2011 Acquia added Acquia Network partner Mobify to improve our customer’s mobile presence, Visual Website Optimizer to improve their conversions, and New Relic to improve performance monitoring. There was little reason for Acquia’s engineering resources to be spread thin creating products for all three categories. Instead, we chose to focus our team’s efforts solely on Drupal related projects, and developed... Mehr

Acquia Wins TiE50 Software/Cloud Computing Award

Acquia Dev Cloud does rock! And according to the TiE50 Awards, Acquia rocks too! Last week, Acquia was chosen as a 2011 winner of the TiE50 Awards, Silicon Valley's premier awards program. Acquia received the award in the Software/Cloud Computing category and was also chosen as one of the 50 most enterprising startups of 2011. "Acquia is honored to be recognized as one of the leaders in the software and cloud computing market,"... Mehr

Acquia Dev Cloud Rocks

Dev Cloud Rocks. This is the sentiment we’ve been hearing a lot from customers lately (and we tend to agree). I had the privilege of speaking with Joey and Chris from SuperStar Media last week. They just launched chrisrock.com on Dev Cloud and are very happy. In fact, when I reviewed my notes from the call, I’d transcribed the word “amazing” no less than 5 times. Need I remind you, we’re talking about Cloud hosting for Drupal sites here... I was thrilled to hear that their favorite things about... Mehr

Puerto Rico

Last week, we flew everyone at Acquia that joined before 2011, as well as their significant others (or someone of their choice) to the Caribbean to celebrate an incredible year. I wrote about the trip in my blog post titled "Acquia goes to the Caribbean". Now we're back from this amazing trip, I've uploaded my pictures to my Puerto Rico 2011 album and included some below. Work hard, live hard!... Mehr

A Vote for Freedom

Today Acquia submitted a short video to promote the next major release of our social software distribution – Drupal Commons 2.0 – to Launch Pad for voting by the public for time on the Enterprise 2.0 stage in Boston on June. Voting is open to the public – so we need your vote! The Enterprise 2.0 Launch Pad, produced by TechWeb (producers of the Enterprise 2.0 Conference, the Web 2.0 Expo, and publisher of Information Week magazine) is “a competition that lets companies present their innovative application (either in development and about to... A new hire's first week at Acquia

I'm excited to come on board with a whole bunch of other new hires (8 starting on one day!), so it's worth saying a little bit about what the on-site experience is like. I'm a remote employee based out of Portland, OR, so my first week was spent at the office in Woburn, MA to get to know the team. And it was a great week. I expected an office that was friendly, but... office-y. (Covers on the TPS reports, please.) Instead, I got an enthusiastic welcome from a vibrant start-up and I hope that other new hires can say the same. For me, it had the same sort of energy as a DrupalCon - seeing old... Mehr

Drupal SEO: The Intersection of Tech and Marketing

Many a well-formed Drupal site has been hacked to pieces by an "evil" Drupal-ignorant marketing agency. "Why? In heavens name, WHY?!" the developer cries as title tags are embedded into theme files, analyticscode is dropped into footer blocks, and mal-formed content is pastedinto node bodies. Devastated, they choke back the bitter taste of tears that only a quad-espresso from the Pasquini Livia in the kitchen could wash away. OK, I'm exaggerating a little...not even espresso could wash those tears away. What's sad is that I hear this story from my developer friends all the time. They built a... Mehr

What NOT to Look at in E2.0 Solutions

Thanks to Alexander Wolfe of InformationWeek for the timely article published over the weekend, “IT Pro Ranking: Enterprise 2.0 Vendors,” where InformationWeek surveyed 619 business technology professionals regarding 1.) if they have deployed an Enterprise 2.0 application, and 2.) how vendors perform on 12 standard benchmarks, as well as specific criteria tailored for the E2.0 category. It’s timely because I just completed an article with Acquia’s... Mehr

How Drupal and Acquia Help Protect Against Web Attacks

Security, or lack thereof, seems to be a popular theme these days, especially as it applies to web applications and even more specifically to open-source CMS. Earlier this week, Mathew Schwartz from InformationWeek wrote an article, Web Applications See Sharp Rise in Attacks, in which he referenced the latest HP DVLabs "2010 Top Cyber Security Risks Report" that brought into question the security of open source CMS applications. The idea that open-source is also an open-door for... Mehr

Five Findings on Community Management

If you haven’t seen it already, last week Jim Storer and The Community Roundtable team released their 2011 State of Community Management Report. I’m just getting my hands on it now as I was out on vacation last week (thank a niece and nephew who had to go to Disney World!). But I was happy to come back to see the report was released! The report compiles lessons learned and facts from the past year that have been discussed by members and outlines Best Practices from Community, Social Media... Mehr
