Heralding a new age in technology use, De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) has cleared Amazon Web Services for adoption in the Netherlands’ financial sector. But, they haven’t just opened the doors to direct use – they have also sanctioned services built and delivered on AWS by third party suppliers. Suddenly these organisations have access to the vast ecosystem of solutions and suppliers that are available to firms in other sectors.
So why does this matter?
- Customer expectations are rising - Financial institutions are expected to deliver seamless multi-channel experiences to their commercial and consumer customers. This means being able to leverage platforms for traditional website, social media and mobile device consumption.
- Regulation is changing the relationship FIs have with their customers – more and more, industry regulation is changing the very nature of the industry and how it operates. For example, the regulations that govern financial inducements and commission payments paid to advisors and banks that came into effect in the Netherlands on January 1st 2013.
- Fierce competition for consumer and business customers means innovation is key to success. Not just for retaining existing customers, but also to recruiting new ones.
It is imperative that FIs be able to respond quickly to all of these challenges by rapidly launching new products and services, and even business models, into the market without delay and without incurring big costs. Access to AWS cloud services is a key enabler to achieving this innovation. Being able to use the lower cost, scalable and instantly available public cloud infrastructure that AWS provides can mean the difference between a go/no-go decision on a campaign or launch and between success and failure.
How can Acquia help in this new cloudy world?
Platforms such as Drupal are well placed to exceed customer expectations out-of-the-box and to help the business be innovative and quick to the market. American Express and Optima Bank are both Drupal users.
Acquia offers a fully supported, managed and optimised platform-as-a-service built exclusively on AWS: Acquia Cloud. Acquia Cloud provides the most secure, reliable, and scalable platform for developing extraordinary digital experiences on Drupal. With DNB’s sanctioned approval – Acquia Cloud can now offer Dutch financial organisations a de-risked, open source digital experience as–a-service in a fraction of the time and cost associated with the traditional model of proprietary software and on-premise hardware.
Hopefully this trend of embracing new platforms and technologies will continue across Europe, unlocking the agility and power of the cloud to better serve FIs and enable them to deliver compelling digital experiences for their customers.
Where can you learn more?
DNB has looked at all the risks and benefits associated with the use of AWS and has concluded that it is suitable for high availability solutions, credit risk analysis and retail banking. This ringing endorsement of AWS platforms indicates that DNB are comfortable with the cloud infrastructure AWS provides. However, this doesn’t mean that institutions shouldn’t do a thorough risk analysis!
