Earlier this year, I was invited to be on a panel for Usability Professional Associations’ (New Hampshire). The discussion was focused on how user experience researchers report/present their findings. Do they use conventional methods such as PowerPoint or Word? Or do they use unconventional methods such as spreadsheets, video, storyboards, and/or sticky notes?
It was insightful to learn how other researchers carefully consider the audience and the message to make their research findings effective. However, the discussion left one important question unanswered “How do researchers choose one medium over the other?” My preliminary research found that a fair amount of information was available about the audience and the message, but there wasn’t much available about the medium. So, I took this opportunity to share my experience on UX Booth, a publication for the user experience community.
The article offers pointers in exploring answers to this question that have helped me to choose the optimal medium to make research findings effective. Although this article focuses on UX research, it is applicable in other professional fields as well.
