Acquia’s social business software distribution, Drupal Commons has allowed many developers to build community sites easily with Drupal. This has always been one of the major goals of Drupal Commons – to help Drupal adoption by making it easy for people to create great community sites quickly without having to build from scratch.
Drupal Commons has been very successful in doing this – so much so we are ready to take the next step. We are changing Drupal Commons to Commons. We believe this will help non-Drupal experts to look beyond the robust Drupal platform as a technology, and focus on the business value of what Commons provides enterprises. We’re focusing on three main areas in social business for which Commons helps organizations:
- Customer Engagement -- e.g. social marketing, social CRM
- Employee Enablement -- e.g. knowledge sharing, expertise location
- Private External Communities -- e.g. channel development, developer communities
A note for you Drupalists building communities with Commons - this is a branding change only. There are no technical implications with this name change. So no worries - this won’t mean extra work for you!
Keep your eye out for lots of exciting announcements around Commons -- like Bryan House's talk on the keynote stage for Acquia’s finalist presentation for Launch Pad at Enterprise 2.0 next week, new training series for Commons site builders, and announcements of major brands and institutions using Commons for internal and external communities.
