I'd say coming soon. No guaranteed dates, but we're hoping to release an alpha of the 7.x-2.x branch in the next couple weeks. That's not to say it will be ready for production at that time, though.

As for D6, our current plans are to not add significant new features, like SES integration, in the core module. That said, Andrew M Riley, who submitted the patch, indicated he's going to create a standalone project to house it, http://drupal.org/node/1085448.
