Acquia Gives Back (by sorting four tons of food!)

Acquians had a great day yesterday at the Greater Boston Food Bank preparing food and household goods for distribution to 550 charitable organization throughout eastern Massachusetts. We combed through 7,661 pounds of donations, discarding spoiled, leaking and post-dated items, and put the remainder in boxes of related items, ready for delivery. On average, each volunteer made possible 112 meals for the needy.

Just as a part of Acquia's mission is to contribute to the vibrancy of the Drupal community that sustains our business, we feel it's important to contribute to the local communities which sustain us, our families and our friends. As an upcoming "Acquia Gives Back" event, we're holding an auction to raise money for local charities. I can't wait to see what the ever-creative Acquians donate!

Yesterday, fifteen of us took time away from DrupalCon preparations, donned our Drupal Gardens t-shirts and gathered around the conveyor belt inside the Food Bank warehouse along with a group from Ocean Spray. At one end, huge pallets of donations arrived from Stop & Shop, Hannafords, CVS, and Target. Each of us stood at a station along the conveyor boxing up similar items like beverages, starches, proteins, snacks, paper products, etc. The afternoon flew by and we wished we'd had even more donations to sort!

Greater Boston Food Bank has been committed to ending hunger in eastern Massachusetts for the last 30 years. Over the last year, they donated over 31 million pounds to food pantries, emergency shelters, and soup kitchens. Acquia is proud to support their work.

Acquians, you are the best. You must have put so much effort to make such a huge donation. Being a volunteer myself I do understand what it takes to do all this work. Congratulations
