Keeping Pace with DigitalDisruption.com

Here are some of the past week's highlights from DigitalDisruption.com, Acquia's portal for examining the impact of digital disruption.
Start-ups Chart the Path to Digital Disruption
You can’t talk about digital disruption without talking about start-ups. By definition, companies that are disrupting a market or industry are either new start-ups or established companies taking a radical turn. We watch start-ups closely because this gives us great visibility into the cutting edge of technology -- and the strategy of planned disruption.
DigitalDisruption.com will be attending Apps World February 4-5 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, which will be hosting a record number of start-ups in a single location. Of course the areas these start-ups are trying to disrupt range from automotive, wearable tech, retail and even food.
How to Avoid Downtime This Holiday Season
Online sales have been an absolute boon for retailers as in-store revenues decline. We’ve already seen a record $2.29 billion spent online on Cyber Monday. In fact, online sales jumped 26 percent to $7.4 billion over the entire Thanksgiving weekend this year.
Point being, more money than ever is being spent online, and big brands need to make sure they’re open for business online 24/7. That means bolstering their backend IT to keep systems and websites up and running.
Digital Disruption: What Entrepreneurs Must Know
Being an entrepreneur and a millennial, I’ve found that I’m drawn to digital disruption. Living in a world filled with apps and digital experiences at my fingertips is fascinating. We are constantly living in a state of disruption, brought about by this new wave of innovation. Entrepreneurs in particular are at the forefront of digital disruption, because we get the pain points, and have the vision to disrupt a market or status quo. But, there are certainly things we need to be mindful of.
Voice-operated Audio Books
What if the next time you wanted to crack open a book or listen to an audio recording, you had the option to make it more interactive? You could play the hero or the spy and take charge of your missions first-hand. Sounds pretty neat right?
Well, that’s exactly what Codename Cygnus aims to do: bring a new medium of interactive audio books to the mass market. Using speech-recognition technology for voice-operated interactions, players take on the role of a secret agent in a fictional world inspired by old time serial radio dramas. The experience of utilizing narrative and interactive dialogue, sound effects, and music is what makes this concept and product so unique.
6 Things Digital Marketers Are Grateful For in 2013
As 2013 draws to a close, it’s natural for digital marketers, along with everyone else, to reflect on the challenges and successes of the year. This year, we have a lot of things to be thankful for. From laudable IPOs that have the “social media is a fad” camp rethinking their mindset to long-awaited trends that have finally come into their own, it’s been a big year for digital marketing.
5 Ways Startups and Entrepreneurs Can Be Disruptive
I had the pleasure of chatting with 21-year-old serial entrepreneur Jeet Banerjee. Starting four companies and selling one, Jeet recently appeared on the TEDx stage in October to talk about why those who have great ideas and dreams should start now, rather than wait on pursuing their dreams.
Coming & Going: Digital Trends for 2013, 2014
This past year has been extraordinary in so many ways. The change has been so breathtaking we hardly notice the amazing trends whizzing by. While I apologize in advance for cluttering the internet with more lists, I thought it might be fun to look back at 2013... but also look forward to 2014. Here are my top 10 (in no particular order) trends that impressed me in the past year, and a stab at the top 10 things we might see in the coming year.
